Amazon.com Launches "Unbox" Video Download Service

Amazon Unbox LogoSeattle - Amazon.com on Thursday announced the launch of a video download service, Amazon Unbox, which will offer a selection of thousands of TV shows, movies and other video content from more than 30 studio and network partners. The service claims DVD-quality picture for video content that can be purchased on one PC and downloaded to another, and also transferred to Windows Media-compatible portable media players.

Facebook Social Network Faces Privacy Backlash Over New Features

San Francisco - Facebook, the second-largest social networking site with 9.5 million primarily college and high school student members, is facing a backlash after it added features that automatically notify friends when changes are made to their profiles. Reuters reported that over 600,000 Facebook members had signed a petition by midday on Thursday, asking the company to discontinue its "News Feed" and "Mini-Feed" features -- which notify friends when a member posts new photos, joins a group, or leaves a blog comment.

Founded in 2000, Wellesley, Mass.-based Mobixell offers products that optimize multimedia quality in mobile messaging services. Its products support content distribution, peer-to-peer content sharing, mobile advertising and other applications.

Fox Reality to Debut TV Reality Series with User-Generated Content

Los Angeles - Fox Reality, a News Corp. network launched in May 2005, announced on Thursday an agreement with producer Mark Rowland's Indie TV ("Supernanny," "Brat Camp"), to develop a new live TV series that will feature user-generated content and audience participation. "Your Instant Reality" will be a weekly, two-hour live show where viewers can interactive with the host and other viewers through real-time polling, text messages and submissions of their own digital content. Viewers will be able to submit material, take part in challenges and vote on outcomes.

TiVo Users Get DVR Access to CBS SportsLine Fantasy Football Game

Alviso, Calif. - TiVo announced on Thursday that it has partnered with CBS SportsLine to make the site's fantasy football game available to TiVo subscribers. CBS SportsLine Fantasy Football Companion can be accessed by broadband-enabled TiVo Series2 digital video recorders, where registered CBS SportsLine Fantasy Football players can manage their leagues, check stats and scores, and watch game highlights.

Texas Instruments to Introduce Mobile TV Chip with Digital Video Recorder

Amsterdam - Chipmaker Texas Instruments announced on Thursday that it partnered with PacketVideo and Silicon & Software Systems to develop digital video recording technology for mobile phones. TI's Hollywood DVB-H chipset and OMAP 2 platform will enable mobile digital video recording and mobile TV picture-in-picture functionality. Handsets featuring the chips are expected to come to market in 2007.

Comcast Hits 3 Billion Video-on-Demand Views

Philadelphia - Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV provider, announced on Thursday that its video-on-demand service has now surpassed 3 billion program views, including a record 180 million viewed during the month of July. Comcast's VOD service launched in 2004, and now offers around 95% of programs for free. The most popular among customers are music videos (540 million viewed), children's shows (330 million), free movies (180 million) and sports and fitness programs (73 million).

RealNetworks: 1.5 Million In-game Streaming Video Ads Served
