Washington - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced an agenda for the Digital Television Consumer Education Workshop it plans to hold on Sept. 26 in Washington, which will discuss how to educate consumers about the pending transition from analog to digital television. Represented at the hearing will be senior citizens, low-income consumers, non-English speakers, people with disabilities, tribes and public interest groups for those in rural areas. Also in attendance will be the Consumer Electronics Association, National Cable Television Association, National Association of Broadcasters. San Francisco - Linden Lab, which operates the "Second Life" virtual world, has implemented a new, voluntary identity verification system on the service. "With the option to verify aspects of their real life identity, such as age and name, Second Life Residents can begin to build trust and safety systems inside the virtual world and their virtual community." Robin Harper, vice president of marketing and community development for Second Life, told Wired.com. In addition to establishing trust between users, the company said the age verification can help virtual land owners and content publishers to screen minors from inappropriate material. Los Angeles - News Corp.'s MySpace online social network on Wednesday announced the launch of the MySpace Music Tour, the company's new series of MySpace-produced and branded nationwide concert tours. The first MySpace Music Tour is being sponsored by Extreme Style by VO5, and will be headlined by Hellogoodbye and Say Anything. Other bands appearing on the 30-show tour will include MySpace Records artist Polysics, and to-be-announced special guests. MySpace users will be given early access to purchase concert tickets directly from the site, which will also offer band tour blogs and contests. Washington - The Washington Post is pulling the plug on its Washington Post Radio project with station owner Bonneville International. The Post has provided news and talk programming for two of Bonneville's stations, 107.7 FM and 1500 AM, since March 2006. The stations also have aired syndicated programming and Washington Nationals baseball games. “The station had a strong core of loyal listeners, but it was not showing the pace of growth that we and Bonneville had hoped to see," said Post president Steve Hills. San Francisco - Boing Boing, an influential blog that covers science and digital culture, on Wednesday announced a redesign of its site that adds a new section on Gadgets, and reinstates reader comments after a four-year absence. Boing Boing Gadgets will feature a daily stream of reviews on consumer electronics, games, and related geek gear, and will be led by former Gizmodo editor-in-chief Joel Johnson. Boing Boing said it hired Teresa Nielsen Hayden, of the Making Light blog, to moderate its new comment threads.
