RIAA Hires Former FBI Official to Head Western Anti-piracy Unit

Los Angeles - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has hired Kathy Leodler, former acting special agent in charge of the FBI's office in San Diego, as the new director of investigations for its Western region anti-piracy unit. Leodler will work with law enforcement engaged in both physical and online music piracy investigations. "Kathy's tremendous experience directing teams in sensitive and complex domestic and international investigations is supreme," said Brad Buckles, EVP of anti-piracy for the RIAA. "Her ability to utilize sophisticated techniques and tactical response will be a huge asset to the hard work we do to further our mission."

Washington - The Digital Media Association (DiMA), which represents the interests of large webcasters including AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo, has hired Greg Barnes, former senior counsel to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, to become the association's legislative counsel and director of government affairs. "We look forward to having Greg on board as we continue to help digital media companies achieve a regulatory and business environment that supports industry growth, creative and technological innovation and greater consumer enjoyment of digital content," DiMA executive director Jonathan Potter.

Paramount Announces Q1 HD DVD Release Slate

Hollywood, Calif. - Confirming its support for Toshiba's HD DVD format in the wake of Warner Bros. defection to Sony's rival Blu-ray format, Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount Home Entertainment on Thursday announced its slate of HD DVD releases for the first quarter. The will include "Zodiac," "Beowulf," "Into the Wild" and "The Kite Runner." Viacom's DreamWorks Animation also remains committed to HD DVD, and will offer "Bee Movie" in March.

TiVo Adds Indie, Intl. Films from Jaman to Broadband Offering

Alviso, Calif. - TiVo (NASD: TIVO) announced on Thursday that it will add thousands of independent and international film titles from Web distributor Jaman to the offering on its network for owners of broadband-connected digital video recorders. TiVo viewers will be able to both rent and purchase films starting at $1.99.

Naxos Taps Digonex for Digital Music Dynamic Pricing Pilot

Indianapolis, Ind. - Digonex Technologies, a provider of optimized pricing platforms for e-commerce, announced on Thursday that it has partnered with classical music label Naxos to test dynamic pricing of select products next month. The Digonex platform will adjust song and album prices up or down, based on consumer demand, on an unnamed major online retail site.

Former K2 Execs Launch True Games Interactive

Orange County, Calif. - Two former executives from multiplayer game service provider K2 Network on Thursday announced the launch of their new game publishing venture, True Games Interactive. The Orange County, Calif.-based company said it is currently raising its first round of financing, and plans to release its first title this summer. The company will offer developers the ability to publish titles on a proprietary platform that utilizes a free-to-play, micro-transaction model. True Games plans to seek existing Eastern content, and also work with Western developers on new content.

Revision3 Web TV Show to Highlight Highest-Rated Digg Videos

San Francisco - Internet TV network Revision3 on Thursday launched The Digg Reel, a weekly program that will showcase the highest-rated user-submitted videos on aggregation site Digg.com. Hosted by Jessica Corbin, the show will collect the videos as well as take viewers behind the scenes to meet their creators.

A colleague sent me an email about Mark Malkoff moving into Ikea while his NY apartment is fumigated. I checked Hitwise data and found a nice spike in traffic to the marklivesinikea.com website and in searches for "mark malkoff", with Thursday the biggest day for visits to the website. The stunt has no doubt been good for Mark's career. But what about Ikea. This is where things get interesting... Ikea is hosting their annual post-holiday sale and this stunt is likely cheaper than expensive TV ads.

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Books and media retail store chain Borders Group (NYSE: BGP) plans to launch its own retail website next month -- and may offer MP3 downloads -- after taking back that responsibility from Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN), which has operated Borders.com since 1991. Borders is the nation's second-largest bookseller, behind Barnes & Noble, but for years has been sharing the profits from its online sales with rival Amazon.

Time Warner Cable to Test Pricing Tied to Bandwidth Usage

New York - Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWX) plans later this year to experiment with charging its high-speed Internet customers based on how much they download each month, the Associated Press reported. Company spokesman Alex Dudley told AP around 5% of its customers can account for up to 50% of the company's network capacity, most likely while downloading HD video content.

Portland, Ore. - A woman sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for illegal file-sharing, whose case was dismissed with prejudice for lack of evidence, will receive attorneys fees from the record label trade group after a federal judge affirmed her motion yesterday, the Recording Industry vs. the People blog reports.
