Sony Delays Launch of Skype for PSP in Japan

Tokyo - Sony (NYSE: SNE) will delay the introduction of the Skype Internet telephone service for its PSP handheld game device in Japan while it works on technical problems, Reuters reports. The company said the microphone it had planned to offer did not meet Skype specifications in Japan, although the microphone did meet Skype specifications outside Japan, and Sony reiterated plans to launch the service overseas later this month.

MTV Signs TV Development Deal with Video Game Journalist

New York - Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) MTV Networks on Wednesday announced a talent and development deal with video game journalist Geoff Keighley, the host of Spike TV's "Game Head," which launches its fifth season this week under the new title, "GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley." Keighly was named executive producer of the new show, and also entered into a development deal with Spike TV to create additional on-air programming, host a number of specials, and consult on its annual awards show.

CSTV.com in Digital Marketing Pact with USA Today

New York - CBS's (NYSE: CBS) CSTV.com college sports service said on Wednesday a digital marketing partnership with Gannett's (NYSE: GCI) USA Today, whereby CSTV.com's CSTV XXL on-demand video player and GameTracker play-by-play application assets will be made available on USAToday.com. CSTV also plans to syndicate short-form video clips to USAToday.com under a new co-branded sports tab.

Carmike Cinemas to Screen Digital 3D U2 Concert Film

Columbus, Ga. - Carmike Cinemas, which owns or operates 270 theaters in 37 states, announced on Wednesday that it will screen "U2's Vertigo World Concert Tour" in digital 3D format at 191 of its theaters beginning on Feb. 5. The multi-million dollar film had its premiere this week at the Sundance Film Festival.

New Rhino Records Site Features 2,000 Embeddable Videos

London - Rhino Records has launched a website that features 2,000 embeddable music videos, as well as artist interviews and other exclusive content, Billboard reports. The label says the site's focus will primarily be to promote its U.K. releases.

eMusic Adds Classical from Chandos, Telarc, Harmonia Mundi

New York - Digital music retailer eMusic on Wednesday said it added the catalogues of classical music labels Chandos Records, Telarc and Harmonia Mundi to its subscription-based service. The company noted that more than half of customers who downloaded recent free classical music samplers from its service went on to purchase more classical music, and that a third of these had never downloaded a classical track before.

Embarq Taps Synacor, MediaNet for Unlimited Music Service

Overland Park, Kan. - Embarq, a provider of bundled voice, data and video services in 18 states, announced on Wednesday the launch of an unlimited music streaming and download service, which is powered by Synacor with 3 million tracks from MediaNet Digital. Embarq subscribers can also pay $9.95 per month for the ability to transfer songs to a portable player, and 99 cents per song to burn selections to CD.

Metacafe Teams with Zed, Nareos for Mobile Video Access

Palo Alto, Calif. - Metacafe, a video-sharing site with 28 million monthly viewers, on Wednesday began offering mobile access to its site, through deals with Nareos and Zed. Zed will power "send to mobile" functionality for Metacafe users in the U.S. and Spain, while Nareos will provide similar services in the U.K., parts of Europe and India.

Library of Congress Taps Aquent for Web Educational Content

Washington - The Library of Congress said that it has awarded a $5.2 million Web services contract to Boston-based Aquent. Under the deal, the company will develop Web-based activities targeting kindergarten through 12th-grade audiences, as well as provide other technology services for the library's "New Visitor's Experience," set to launch this spring.

Finalists Named for 8th Game Developers Choice Awards

San Francisco - CMP on Wednesday announced the list of finalists for its eighth annual Game Developers Choice Awards, with Valve's "Portal" and 2K Game's "BioShock" each grabbing five nominations each. Other titles receiving multiple nominations included Infinity Ward's "Call of Duty 4," Harmonix's "Rock Band" and Nintendo's "Super Mario Galaxy." Playyoo Launches Beta of Free Mobile Games Community

London - Playyoo on Wednesday announced the beta launch of its free mobile games portal and social gaming community. The site offers 200 Adobe Flash Lite-based games, recommendations based on past choices, and tools that allow both experienced and first-time users create and publish their own mobile games. The company will also host developer contests with prizes totaling $40,000.

I ordered a MacBook Air site unseen. That's a first for me. As I write this I'm about to go workout and it dawns on me that I'm on my 3rd generation of Apple IPod. I started with the original, switched to a bigger version (to back up all my pics and show off my kids to my friends) and then for the holidays, got myself and wife an iTouch.

Shares of Apple Plunge Following Weak Outlook

Cupertino, Calif. - Shares of Apple (NASD: AAPL) slid nearly 11% on Wednesday after the company said that its second-quarter earnings are likely to be weaker than expected. CFO Peter Oppenheimer said that the company expects to earn $0.94 a share on revenue of $6.8 billion, well below consensus analyst estimates of $1.09 and $6.99 billion, respectively, according to Thomson Financial.

MPAA Admits Error in Study; Campus P2P Not as Damaging

Washington - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has admitted there was a "human error" in a 2005 study on illegal downloading it commissioned, which attributed 40% of the movie industry industry's domestic losses from illegal downloading to college students -- a figure it now pegs at around 15%, the Associated Press reported. "We take this error very seriously and have taken strong and immediate action to both investigate the root cause of this problem as well as substantiate the accuracy of the latest report," the group said.

Last.fm Debuts Free Music Streaming; Will Pay Unsigned Acts

New York - Last.fm, the social music discovery service acquired last May by CBS (NYSE: CBS), announced on Wednesday that it has launched a new free service that allows anyone to listen to songs on-demand -- from all four major labels and more than 150,000 independents. The company claims 20 million unique monthly users in 240 countries, and said the new service will be available worldwide in the coming months, after a limited launch in the U.S., U.K. and Germany today.
