MTV: 6 Million Song Downloads Sold for "Rock Band" Game

Cambridge, Mass. - Harmonix, the video game studio unit of Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) MTV Networks that created the "Rock Band" music game, announced on Thursday that more than 6 million song downloads have been purchased for the game since its launch just over three months ago. Over 70 songs are currently available for purchase and download for the game, priced at $0.99 to $2.99 per track, with the vast majority selling for $1.99. "The success of Rock Band downloadable content to date firmly reinforces our vision and its potential as a platform for music discovery," said Paul DeGooyer, SVP DVD, Gaming and Audio, MTV.

Sony to Add Blu-ray Interactive Features in PS3 Software Update

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America said on Thursday that the next system software update for its PlayStation 3 will add BD-LIVE, a set of interactive features for the game console's Blu-ray player. BD-LIVE will enable features such as downloadable video content, ringtones and games. Sony said the update, due for release in late March, will also enable photo and music playlists on the PS3 to be copied to a PSP handheld.

LoftCity Debuts Online Community for Pro Filmmakers

New York - LoftCity, a site that offers an online community, production tools and digital distribution services for professional filmmakers, on Thursday announced its launch after a six-week beta trial that attracted 3,100 filmmakers from 60 countries. The site offers filmmakers a "private and secure virtual 'loft' where they can showcase and manage the entire production process from start to finish," the company said.

National CineMedia to Bring "AudienceGame" to Theaters

Centennial, Colo. - National CineMedia, a provider of in-theater digital advertising and entertainment programming, announced on Thursday that it has partnered with Brand Experience Lab to bring its "AudienceGame" interactive game to movie theater screens. The 'advergame' "is played by theater audiences moving together to act as a 'human joystick' to control the gaming elements on the big screen," the company said. Brand Experience Lab said its custom AudienceGames for clients including MSNBC.com in the U.S. and Volvo in the U.K. have generated up to 70% unaided recall with audiences.

Midway Games CEO David Zucker Resigns

Chicago - Video game developer and publisher Midway Games (NASD: MWY) announced on Thursday that chief executive David Zucker is leaving the company, and will be replaced by interim CEO and president Matthew V. Booty until a replacement can be found. Midway veteran Booty was most recently SVP of worldwide studios. "Dynamic new leadership is needed to bring Midway to its full potential," said Midway chair Shari Redstone. "Our new leader must have the proven capabilities and track record to lead Midway and to reclaim its place in the forefront of the fast growing videogame industry," added Sumner Redstone, chairman and CEO of Midway parent National Amusements.

N.J. AG Subpoenas College Gossip Site JuicyCampus

Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey Attorney General's Office and Division of Consumer Affairs have subpoenaed JuicyCampus, a site that lets college students post anonymous gossip, as part of an investigation into whether the site violates New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act.

Sony BMG Revenue Down 27.8%; Digital Up 40%

Gutersloh, Germany - German media conglomerate Bertelsmann has reported its annual earnings for 2007, and said that revenues from its share of joint venture record label Sony BMG fell 27.8%, to $2.3 billion, as physical revenues fell 17% and digital revenues increased by 40%. Digital now accounts for 17% of total revenue at Sony BMG, up from 12% in 2006.

German Court Says ISPs Can't ID File-Swappers

Los Angeles - A German court has ruled that the identities of ISP subscribers should not be disclosed as part of potential file-sharing copyright investigations, finding that such measures can only be used for "heavy" crimes like terrorism, murder or child pornography, TorrentFreak reports. The Federal Constitutional Court's (FCC) ruling will stand for six months, after which time it could be made final.

EMI Game to License Nokia's Unlimited Mobile Music Service

Helsinki - Major record label EMI is in talks with Nokia (NYSE: NOK) on licensing its songs for the company's forthcoming "Comes With Music" unlimited mobile music service, Reuters reports. "We want to be part of it. I believe strongly that when it launches we will be there, with a full offering," Wemppa Koivumaki, head of EMI Finland, told a news conference.
