Netflix to Credit Customers for Website Outage

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) plans to issue credits to subscribers whose shipments were delayed because of a website outage on Monday, the Associated Press reported. The outage, which wasn't completely fixed until Tuesday morning, resulted in a one-day delay for customers expecting to receive DVDs on Tuesday. Affected subscribers will receive a 5% credit on their monthly bill.

Former AOL Execs Launch Local Search Firm Loladex

Leesburg, Va. - Loladex, a local search start-up founded by two former executives from AOL, said on Wednesday that it has launched its first product on social networking site Facebook. The company said that its application puts a new spin on search, helping users find local businesses based on recommendations from their friends and other sources. The service also allows people to see picks from third-party partners such as OpenTable.com and ServiceMagic.com, as well as Washingtonian magazine. The company said that it plans to release versions for other social networks in the coming months.

Social Media Site FriendFeed Launches Developer Platform

Mountain View, Calif. - FriendFeed, a service that lets users keep up with what Web pages, photos, videos and music their friends and family are sharing, has announced the release of a developer platform. The FriendFeed API will allow developers to integrate the service into other applications, such as creating a mobile phone interface, or FriendFeed blog widget.

Interactive Version of Vietnam War Memorial Site Launched

Washington - Footnote, a Utah-based website that features searchable original documents, said that it has launched an online interactive photo of the Vietnam War Memorial, in conjunction with the National Archives and Records Administration. The site allows users to locate any of the more then 58,000 names on the wall by typing them into a search box. The site then zooms in to the area where the individual name can be viewed, and allows visitors to access the soldier's service record and view comments, stories and photos that have been contributed by other visitors.

Mobile Game "Surviving High School" Hits 7.5M Downloads

Los Angeles - Vivendi Games Mobile said on Wednesday that its "Surviving High School" episodic mobile game saw 7.5 million episode downloads in 2007, which the company says makes it the most successful original IP in mobile gaming history. Vivendi Games Mobile acquired the game's original developers, Centerscore, in 2006.

New "South Park" Site Offers Every Episode for Free Streaming

- Technology publisher CNET Networks (NASD: CNET) said on Wednesday that it will lay off 120 employees, or about 4-5% of its worldwide staff, as part of a plan to "put greater emphasis on its strategic priorities, which include focusing on its leading brands, driving greater efficiencies throughout the business, and reducing costs," the company said in a regulatory filing.

Motorola to Split Into Two Companies Next Year

Schaumberg, Ill. - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) announced plans on Wednesday to split into two publicly-traded companies next year, one for its mobile device business and another for its broadband and mobility solutions. "Creating two industry-leading companies will provide improved flexibility, more tailored capital structures, and increased management focus - as well as more targeted investment opportunities for our shareholders," said Greg Brown, Motorola's president and CEO.

Redwood City, Calif. - The board of game developer Take-Two Interactive (NASD: TTWO) on Wednesday rejected a $2 billion unsolicited takeover bid from Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS), calling the $26-a-share offer "inadequate in multiple respects" and "contrary to the best interests" of its stockholders." The board said that it will continue to explore other alternatives, including a possible combination with another company.
