Buzz Watch: Tokio Hotel, Habbo and Breaking a Band in a Digital Universe

Authored by Jay Baage on April 15, 2008 - 2:41pm.

I'm on my soapbox again about the changing landscape for entertainment marketing and sales. I want to do a quick follow-up to my last article about the challenges that face Habbo Hotel, the popular virtual world for teens, when trying to cut a deal with the record labels to feature and sell their music. Today, the popular German teen rock sensation, Tokio Hotel, did an appearance in Habbo's Canadian Hotel and they are not alone. So far over 300 celebrity guests have visited Habbo to chat with fans and promote their projects. Clearly the artists as well as the record labels see the promotional value of following the fans to their online hang-outs. Habbo was subsequently the first virtual world to sign a deal with William Morris Agency. So why not set up a system to easily monetize music in this new media channel?

Report: Only 10% of Amazon MP3 Customers Also Used iTunes

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on April 15, 2008 - 8:42am.

New York - The digital music market may be bigger than previously thought, as a new report from market research firm NPD Group found that only 10% of customers at Amazon.com's (NASD: AMZN) new MP3 store had also purchased songs from Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store. "The fact that Amazon's early growth does not appear to be at the expense of Apple iTunes is a healthy indication that the digital music customer pool can expand into new consumer groups who have not yet joined the iTunes community," NPD analyst Russ Crupnick.

Analysis: Blockbuster, CinemaNow, Devices and Desires

Authored by Paul Sweeting on April 15, 2008 - 6:49am.
It's probably not enough to rescue Blockbuster's share price from the shellacking it's taken since announcing its unsolicited bid for Circuit City, but you can hear an echo of Blockbuster's logic in the deal being announced today between online movie service CinemaNow and Technicolor's Electronic Distribution Services unit. Under the deal, Technicolor will provide the "digital supply chain" for CinemaNow's strategy of embedding its virtual storefront on consumer electronics devices.

Mark Cuban on CEO Pay - Eliminate All Free Lottery Tickets

Authored by Mark Cuban on April 15, 2008 - 6:17am.
There is a game played by CEOs with the corporate issuance of lottery tickets. Otherwise known as stock. Stock can be issued in any number of ways, shapes or forms. Warrants, options, restricted or unrestricted stock. No matter what you call it, every CEO hired, is asking for equity knowing that their only goal is to hit the jackpot and create a pool of wealth that puts them in the "fuck you" wealth category. Thats enough money to buy or rent just about anything you can think of and put you in position to never have to work again. You just live off the cash in the bank.
