Apple iPhone Third-Party Applications Due to Launch on Monday

San Francisco - Apple (NASD: AAPL) is expected to release the first native third-party applications for its iPhone on Monday -- the same day that CEO Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the next-generation model of the handset -- CNET News.com reported, citing a source at a software company that has been working on an iPhone application. That company plans to launch its iPhone application on Monday, signaling that the App Store that will be the only place where users can purchase and download the applications will also launch next week.

Boston Finds New Lead Singer via MySpace Karaoke Vids

Los Angeles - Classic rock group Boston has hired a new lead singer, who came to their attention via karaoke videos posted on his MySpace profile. Tommy DeCarlo, a 43-year-old father of two residing in Charlotte, N.C., told ABC's "Good Morning America" that his daughter posted videos of him singing karaoke Boston songs on MySpace, which Boston founder Tom Scholz's wife came across as the band was searching for a singer to replace Brad Delp, who committed suicide in March 2007.

Individual Radiohead Tracks Now on Sale from iTunes Store

Cupertino, Calif. - Radiohead's catalog is now available for download in DRM-free format from Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes store, after the band apparently caved on its stance that its songs only be sold bundled as albums. Apple's policy dictates that consumers may purchase individual songs. Radiohead's music has been available on digital services like 7digital since last year, but only as full albums.

Sony to Produce Original Video Series "Qore" for PlayStation 3

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Future US, publisher of The Official PlayStation Magazine, to produce an original, monthly HD program that will be distributed exclusively through the PlayStation Store for its PlayStation 3 console. The interactive "Qore" episodes, available for $2.99 each or $24.99 annually, will feature multimedia news, developer interviews, in-depth game previews and behind-the-scenes, in addition to game demos, betas, add-ons and other downloadable and game-related content.

Activision to Publish "Guitar Hero: Metallica"

Los Angeles - Activision (NASD: ATVI) plans to release a Metallica-themed version of its popular "Guitar Hero" game, according to an SEC filing noted by Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Edward Woo, GameSpot reported. Activision has already announced a version of the game featuring Aerosmith, which is due for release later this month.

Peter Gabriel-backed Recommendation Service The Filter Debuts

London - Peter Gabriel-backed online entertainment service The Filter on Tuesday announced its official launch, offering a catalog of 5 million songs and 330,000 movies, Billboard reports. The site offers recommendations based on a user's existing media library, as well as data from similar services like Last.fm. The Filter also aims to eventually offer cross-media picks, such as movie recommendations based on musical tastes.

NBCU, Nielsen to Measure Across TV, Web Video, Buying Habits

New York - NBC Universal and ratings and research firm Nielsen have announced a partnership to create a new sales and marketing metric, that will combine TV and Web video ratings with databases of consumer activity for broader overall product categories, including packaged goods, pharmaceuticals, automotive and movies. The companies said their effort will provide advertisers with "unprecedented connection between purchasing behavior and viewing habits across multiple platforms."

Vollee Launches Mobile Version of "Second Life"

Redwood City, Calif. - Vollee, a service that offers PC applications on mobile devices by streaming them over 3G networks, on Tuesday announced the beta release of its mobile application for Linden Lab's "Second Life" virtual world. The application allows anyone with a qualified 3G or Wi-Fi handset to login to the virtual world using their existing Second Life accounts.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Billionaire financier Carl Icahn will attempt to remove Jerry Yang as the CEO of Yahoo (NASD: YHOO), should he successfully gain control of the company's board, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Icahn in an interview accused Yang and Yahoo's board of "completely sabotaging" Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) recent takeover bid.

Courts Give Fantasy Sports Leagues Free Access to Player Stats

Washington - The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from Major League Baseball in a move that will give fantasy sports leagues the rights to use players' names and statistics without paying a license fee. The initial court ruling in favor of fantasy sports league operators came in 2005, and MLB and its players' association appealed to the Supreme Court in February, arguing that players should retain control over the use of their names and likenesses, and that such licenses are worth billions of dollars.

Report: Blu-ray Awareness Gaining; Purchase Intent Still Low

Port Washington, N.Y. - The percentage of U.S. HDTV owners aware of the next-generation Blu-ray Disc format has grown to 45%, from 35% in June 2007, but just 6% of all consumers and 9% of HDTV owners said they plan to buy a Blu-ray player in the next six months, according to a survey conducted by market research firm NPD Group.

Time Warner Cable Tests Metered Internet Service in Texas

New York - Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) will this week begin testing a new metered pricing scheme for some of its broadband subscribers in Texas, where users will be charged an extra $1 per gigabyte if they exceed their monthly bandwidth allowance. "We think it's the fairest way to finance the needed investment in the infrastructure," Kevin Leddy, Time Warner Cable's EVP of advanced technology, told the Associated Press, adding that 5% of the company's subscribers account for half of the capacity on its local cable lines.

Online "Brain Games" Developer Lumos Labs Raises $3 Million
