MySpace to Stream Presidential Debates, Add Interactivity

Los Angeles - News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace announced on Wednesday a partnership with the Commission on Presidential Debates, wherein MySpace will launch MyDebates.org, a new site offering tools to expand viewership of the upcoming Presidential and Vice Presidential debates. The site will feature an application that lets users embed a live stream of the debates on their own site or social network page, as well as "issue icons" that appear as candidates discuss specific main topics, and multiple choice poll questions to further engage viewers. Debate videos will also be archived on the site for later viewing.

Robertson: Cablevision Ruling Bodes Well for MP3tunes Lawsuit

San Diego - Michael Robertson, head of music storage locker service MP3tunes -- which is currently the target of a copyright suit from EMI -- said yesterday that a recent court ruling in favor of a similar video service from Cablevision "sets a sturdy legal precedence which MP3tunes can use to battle for the legality of our online music storage service." "The parallels to Cablevision are striking with the primary difference being they're video and we're music. Both are services storing your personal content and playing it back for you," Robertson wrote in a post on his blog. Robertson adds that the pending suit against his company is being heard by the same federal court that delivered the Cablevision ruling.

The Orchard Inks Multi-faceted Deal with Lil Jon

New York - Digital music distributor The Orchard (NASD: ORCD) on Wednesday announced a deal with rapper and producer Lil Jon, whereby the company will digitally reissue the artist's back catalogue -- which it now owns through its acquisition of TVT Records. Under the deal, Lil Jon has withdrawn a "multi-million-dollar objection to the TVT sale proceedings," while The Orchard has released him from all future obligations under his TVT contract and granted him ownership of master recordings for his upcoming album "Crunk Rock." Lil Jon will also now collaborate with the company on A&R, as well as support The Orchard's Brand Entertainment group.

JASRAC Sues Japanese Video Site TV Break Over Copyrights

Tokyo - The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) has filed a $1.2 million copyright infringement lawsuit against Pandora TV, which operates the "TV Break" user-posted video site, Billboard reports. JASRAC says it has been asking the company to license the music videos, movies and TV shows it offers since June 2007.

Epic Records, Massify.com Team on Music Video Competition

New York - Sony BMG's Epic Records has announced a music video competition collaboration with Massify.com, an online social network of aspiring filmmakers. The contest will select filmmakers and actors from the network to work with RSA Films to produce the official music video for a song by Epic roster band Low vs Diamond.

Veveo to Power Video Search for Verizon's FiOS TV

Andover, Mass. - Video search and mobile video developer Veveo said on Wednesday that its technology will power video search for Verizon's 1.2 million FiOS TV digital TV service customers. The technology allows for a standard TV remote to search for content across Verizon's linear channels, video-on-demand and DVR content.

California Pays $280K in Attorney's Fees to Video Game Industry

Washington - The state of California has reimbursed the video game industry $282,794 in attorney's fees, which the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) expended in challenging the state's law restricting the sale of video games to minors.

New York - Media giant Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) said on Wednesday that it will officially separate its dial-up Internet access business from its content and advertising business beginning next year. "We've made the key decisions that will enable us to run AOL's access and audience businesses separately beginning in 2009," said CEO Jeff Bewkes. The move would make it easier for the company to sell one or both of the businesses, following recent discussions with suitors including Yahoo (NASD: YHOO), Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) and EarthLink (NASD: ELNK).

Online Indie Music Retailer CD Baby Acquired by Disc Makers

Portland, Ore. - CD Baby, an online retailer of CDs for over 242,000 independent artists, has been acquired by CD and DVD manufacturer Disc Makers for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 1997, Portland, Ore.-based CD Baby charges a one-time setup fee of $35 per CD, allows artists to set their own prices, and retains $4 of every sale while paying artists on a weekly basis.
