Time Warner, Getty Images to Resurrect Life.com

New York - Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) has partnered with photography archive Getty Images to form a joint venture, See Your World, that will resurrect Life magazine online in the first quarter of 2009, PaidContent reported. The mainly ad-supported site is expected to launch with 6 million photos, and eventually add up to 15 million.

New York Times Debuts TimesPeople Social Network

New York - The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) on Tuesday debuted its TimesPeople social network, which allows registered users to create profiles, add friends, and launch a news feed that tells others when they have recommended or commented on a NYTimes.com story. This feed can then also be added to a reader's Facebook profile.

Netflix Adds Streaming TV Episodes From CBS, Disney

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) on Tuesday announced deals with CBS Television Network (NYSE: CBS) and Disney-ABC Television Group (NYSE: DIS) that will allow Netflix subscribers to stream current-season and library episodes of TV shows to their PCs and televisions. The deals include CBS' "CSI" and its spin-offs, as well as "NCIS" and "Numbers," as well as Disney's "Hannah Montana," "Wizards of Waverly Place" and "The Suite Life on Deck."

ThePlatform Replaces Microsoft as AP Video Partner

New York - Newsgathering agency The Associated Press announced on Tuesday that it has selected thePlatform to power its Online Video Network, replacing previous partner Microsoft (NASD: MSFT). The network syndicates AP video content to more than 2,100 newspaper, broadcast and other media websites in the U.S., and claims 61 million monthly unique visitors. The AP told PaidContent that Microsoft will continue to serve ads for its Online Video Network.

Michael Moore Doc "Slacker Uprising" Released for Free Online

Los Angeles - Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore on Tuesday posted his latest feature-length film, "Slacker Uprising," for free download to residents of the U.S. and Canada from the film's website, Reuters reported. The film, which follows Moore through swing states during the 2004 elections, is being distributed through Blip.tv. "Slacker Uprising" cost about $2 million to produce, according to Reuters, and will also be distributed as a low-cost DVD.

Pandora Signs Best Buy, Beck's to Sponsor iPhone Music App

San Francisco - Personalized streaming radio service Pandora has announced that Best Buy and Beck's have signed on as the first sponsors of its popular music application for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch, which has been downloaded over 1.1 million times. Best Buy will be the exclusive advertiser on Pandora for iPhone for the first 30 days, while Beck's bought the subsequent 30 days.

Funtank Buys Wrigley's Branded Game Portal Candystand.com

New York - Funtank, a newly-formed online entertainment publisher, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Candystand.com, the branded online game portal launched 11 years ago by confectioner Wrigley's. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Funtank's WDDG unit has managed Candystand.com since 2005, and said it will open the site to other brands and advertisers later this year. The site currently counts nearly 10 million unique monthly visitors.

NHL to Offer $169/Season Live Game Streaming Service

New York - The National Hockey League (NHL) is introducing a new Web streaming service, GameCenter Live, that will allow subscribers to watch most every game live from its website, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

RIAA Rejects $200-Per-Song Damages; Seeks Jury's Opinion

Los Angeles - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) will let a jury decide the amount of copyright infringement damages an admitted file-swapper must pay, after it rejected a federal judge's suggestion that she pay $200 per song, less than the $750 minimum sought by the record label trade group, Ars Technica reports.

T-Mobile Unveils First Google Phone, Amazon MP3 Link

New York - Mobile network operator T-Mobile USA on Tuesday introduced the G1, the first mobile phone to feature Google's Android operating system, which will sell for $179 with a two-year voice and data agreement when it goes on sale first in the U.S. on Oct. 22. Viewed as a smartphone that will challenge Apple's iPhone, the G1 -- manufactured by Taiwan's HTC -- features both a touch-screen display and a full QWERTY hardware keyboard that slides out from underneath.

Music Industry Reaches Deal on Some Digital Royalties

Washington - The major record labels, music publishers and large webcasters on Tuesday announced a breakthrough agreement on royalty payments for interactive streaming and limited digital downloads, which will for the first time see mechanical royalty payments on these services. Under the agreement, which was submitted as draft regulations to the Copyright Royalty Board, providers of limited download and interactive streaming services -- including subscription and ad-supported services -- will generally pay a mechanical royalty of 10.5% of revenue, with minimum payments in certain circumstances.
