Walmart Launches IPTV-based In-Store Digital Ad Network

Bentonville, Ark. - Retail giant Walmart (NYSE: WMT) on Wednesday introduced the Walmart Smart Network, an in-store IPTV-based network that it hopes to expand to 27,000 screens in more than 2,700 stores by 2010. The company sunk $10 million into research and development for the network, which will allow advertisers to target by store, screen, day and time-of-day. Walmart is working with Studio2 for custom programming; Thomson's Premier Retail Networks for operations and ad sales; and DS-IQ for analytical insights for advertisers. Walmart previously operated a satellite-based in-store network in 3,000 stores.

HarperCollins Debuts Authonomy Social Network

London - Publisher HarperCollins has launched a social network for aspiring authors, Authonomy.com, where members will be tasked with reading sample chapters and manuscripts with an eye towards discovering new talent, FT.com reports. HarperCollins has pledged to read the ten top-rated submissions to the site each month; the company generally received 50 submissions each week. The invite-only version of Authonomy attracted 1,200 members and 360 submissions.

We7 Adds EMI Tracks to Ad-Supported Music Service

London - We7, an ad-supported online music service, announced that it has added some 400,000 tracks from major label EMI's catalog to its service, to be made available both as ad-funded streams and paid MP3 downloads. U.K.-based We7 has similar licensing deals with Sony BMG and Warner Music. "I am very happy my catalogue is finally available on We7," said We7 co-founder and investor, and EMI roster artist Peter Gabriel.

Nokia Ships $800 N96 Multimedia Computer

Espoo, Finland - Nokia (NYSE: NOK) on Wednesday began shipping its Nokia N96 multimedia computer, a EUR 550 ($800) handset that features a 2.8-inch display, live mobile TV, 5-megapixel camera, turn-by-turn voice navigation and 16GB of internal memory. The company said that, in many markets, the N96 will come pre-loaded with a "blockbuster movie."

New Stream Media Signs Majors to U.K. Concert Streaming Deal

London - New Stream Media, a provider of digital media broadcasting and distribution services, announced on Wednesday that it has signed licensing deals with all four major labels, for the rights to record and distribute live concerts from London's O2 stadium and indigo2 venues. The deal includes online, digital TV and mobile rights. New Stream also produces "Live at indigo2," a live concert series broadcast on ITV2 and made available for purchase and download via 7digital.com.

The Orchard to Distribute MusicMasters Jazz, Classical Tracks

New York - The Orchard (NASD: ORCD), a digital distributor of music and video content, said on Wednesday that it has signed a deal with Musical Heritage Society's MusicMasters label for the rights to distribute rare classical jazz recordings to digital retailers. The deal includes rare recordings by Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and others.

Germany's Saturn Taps 24-7 Entertainment for Music Store

Berlin - 24-7 Entertainment, a provider of branded digital and mobile entertainment distribution services, announced that German retail giant Saturn will be its first European partner to offer major label Universal Music's full digital music catalog in a DRM-free format. With the addition of over 215,000 tracks from Universal, Saturn's 24-7-powered store now offers over 2 million MP3 tracks for purchase and download.

El Segundo, Calif. - Satellite TV provider DirecTV (NYSE: DTV) announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its relationship with TiVo (NASD: TIVO), and will jointly develop and distribute a new HD DirecTV DVR with TiVo to its 17.1 million subscribers.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - The Abu Dhabi Media Company, a Middle Eastern media conglomerate formed in 2007 that has interest across publishing, TV, radio and digital media, announced on Wednesday that it will sink more than $1 billion over the next five years into the creation of full-length feature films and digital content. The Imagenation joint venture will partner with U.S.-based and other international producers to finance and produce content for both the global and Arabic-language markets, and expects an initial slate of eight films each year.

Gannett Acquires Majority Stake in CareerBuilder

McLean, Va. - Gannett (NYSE: GCI), the publisher of USA Today and 84 other daily newspapers, said on Wednesday that it has paid $135 million to Tribune for an additional 10% stake in CareerBuilder, giving the company a controlling interest in the country's largest online job site. Gannett now owns 50.8% of CareerBuilder.

Survey: Over 70% of DVR Owners "Can't Live Without" Them
