Comcast Launches TV, Movie Downloads at Fancast Store

Philadelphia - Comcast (NASD: CMCSA) has quietly expanded its Fancast broadband service to include paid video downloads, to compete with similar offerings like the iTunes Store, Amazon Unbox and CinemaNow. The Fancast Store, now in beta, offers 3,100 movies and TV episodes, at prices ranging from $1.99 to $9.99. Download rentals are also available starting at $3.99. Previously, Fancast had offered streaming video content from partners including Hulu. Gizmodo further reports that Comcast plans to soon launch a Fancast Mobile application that enables live video streaming to mobile phones, along with features like remote DVR scheduling.

CNBC Inks Content, Social Networking Deal with LinkedIn

Englewood Cliffs, N.J. - NBC Universal's (NYSE: GE) CNBC announced that it has partnered with business-focused social network LinkedIn, and will integrate LinkedIn functionality into CNBC.com, while CNBC content will be broadly distributed across the LinkedIn network, which claims 27 million users worldwide. CNBC will also broadcast LinkedIn community-generated content, including survey results and on-air Q&As with CNBC guests and reporters.

 

National Lampoon Acquires ZingFu.com

Los Angeles - Continuing a string of acquisitions, National Lampoon said on Thursday that it has acquired ZingFu.com, a provider of "widgetized social content," for an undisclosed sum. Launched in 2005, ZingFu lets users create cards, pets and 'zings' from their own photos and share them via social platforms and email. Los Angeles-based National Lampoon also recently purchased DrunkUniversity.com, CollegeHangover.com, Comedy Express and AllModelZone.com.

Target to Exclusively Sell Aguilera Greatest Hits Album

New York - Retail store chain Target (NYSE: TGT) and Target.com will be the exclusive retail spots to purchase a forthcoming greatest hits album from Sony BMG/RCA Records artist Christina Aguilera, Billboard reports. Fans who pre-order the CD online will also receive a free Aguilera song download. Target has previously scored exclusive album retail deals with artists including Alicia Keys, John Legend and the Jonas Brothers.

Taco Bell Reprises "Feed the Beat" Indie Music Promotion

Irvine, Calif. - Fast food chain Taco Bell said on Thursday that it will reprise its "Feed the Beat" indie music promotion, this year offering 100 bands a month's supply of Taco Bell Bucks ($500) while they are on tour. This year, three bands will also be selected to record a single that will be promoted on the Feed the Beat website. Past recipients included We Are the Fury, Meriwether and Girl Talk -- the latter of whom shared all of his Taco Bell food winnings with fans after a concert in Pittsburgh.

BETARecords.com to Launch Half-Hour TV Show

Hollywood - BETARecords.com, an online music site focused on new music and social networking, on Thursday announced the launch of BETA Records TV, a half-hour weekly TV series that will air in over 140 U.S. television markets. The series, a mix of live performances, music news, interviews and product reviews, will begin airing the first of 52 episodes in late October, in cooperation with BinTune TV.

MP3tunes Adds Support for Logitech Squeezebox Boom

San Diego - MP3tunes, an online music storage locker and streaming service, announced on Thursday that it has partnered with Logitech to make songs stored in a user's MP3tunes locker available via the new Squeezebox Boom networked boombox music player. The $299 Squeezebox Boom lets users stream their home PC music collections, as well as Web radio stations, over a WiFi network to the portable stereo.

Comcast Appeals FCC Sanctions Over P2P Throttling

Washington - Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), the nation's largest cable TV company and second-largest broadband ISP, on Thursday appealed sanctions levied against it by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over the company's throttling of customers' peer-to-peer traffic to the U.S. Court of Appeals. Comcast is arguing that, since FCC rules did not specifically prohibit its practice of blocking file-sharing traffic, "the Commission's action was legally inappropriate and its findings were not justified by the record," according to a statement published by The New York Times.

Tecmo Rejects Square Enix Bid; Seeks Merger With Koei

Microsoft Cuts Xbox 360 Price in U.S. to $199, Below $249 Wii

Seattle - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) has announced plans to slash the price of its entry-level Xbox 360 video game console in the U.S. from $279 to $199, dropping it below the $250 price tag on the popular Nintendo Wii in advance of the holiday shopping season, BusinessWeek reports. The Xbox 360 Arcade, which does not come with a hard drive, will sell for $199, while the 60GB Xbox 360 Pro will come down in price from $349 to $299, and 120GB Xbox 360 Elite will be discounted to $399 from $449.

Early Legal P2P Music Service Wippit Shuts Down

London - Wippit, an eight-year-old firm that launched an early, legal peer-to-peer music service, has shut down, Distorted Loop reports. "Wippit has closed. After eight years of pushing the digital boundaries, Wippit can no longer compete in the current market climate. Thank you to everyone that has supported us over the years and apologies to those that will miss us," a Wippit spokesperson told Distorted Loop.

Tokyo - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) has joined a dozen other companies investing in the first 24-hour, English-language TV network in Japan, to be launched by broadcaster NHK in February, according to Thomson Financial, which cited a report in the local Nikkei newspaper.
