Esquire 75th Anniversary Issue Features First E-Ink Cover

Dearborn, Mich. - Esquire Magazine this week launched the first-ever mass distribution of electronic ink technology, placing an E Ink electronic display on the cover of its 75th anniversary issue, along with an ad for the 2009 Ford Flex. Esquire is distributing 100,000 issues with the special display -- whose battery is expected to last six months -- at Borders, Barnes & Noble and select newsstands. The same E Ink electronic display is used in Amazon's Kindle e-book reader device.

AT&T Debuts Total Home DVR for U-verse Subscribers

Dallas - AT&T (NYSE: T) on Tuesday introduced a new Total Home DVR for its U-verse digital TV service subscribers, which will allow for playback of standard and HD recorded programs on any connected TV in the home. The service allows for playback of up to four recorded shows at once on different TVs, and for instance will let a viewer pause a recorded show and pick up where he left off in another room. AT&T will initially deploy the new service in the Bay Area at no additional charge, and will offer it to all U-verse customers by the end of the year.

CreateSpace MP3 Places Indie Artists' Songs on Amazon MP3

Scotts Valley, Calif. - Amazon.com's (NASD: AMZN) CreateSpace on-demand distribution unit on Tuesday launched a new service, CreateSpace MP3, that lets independent musicians and labels sell their albums and songs as DRM-free MP3s through the Amazon MP3 store. There is no setup fee for the service, which also provides the option for artists to simultaneously sign up to sell their CDs through the CreateSpace Disc on Demand service.

 

Nine U.S. Radio Broadcasters Support FM Song Tagging

New York - Nine U.S. radio broadcasters on Tuesday announced their support for FM Song Tagging, which allows listeners to use tag songs they hear over the air on supported devices, and retrieve artist data and links to purchase them. More than 450 FM stations operated by Beasley, Bonneville, CBS Radio, Citadel, Clear Channel Radio, Cox Radio, Emmis, Entercom and Greater Media will support Song Tagging, which was developed by Jump2Go and Clear Channel Radio. The announcement coincides with a Microsoft Zune update that lets users tag and instantly retrieve songs they hear on the device's built-in FM radio.

Musinaut Introduces MXP4 Interactive Music Format

Paris - French technology firm Musinaut has developed a new interactive music format, MXP4, which allows for the embedding of data such as lyrics, images, remixes and other content into song files, The Register reported. Different "skins" of a song can be selected, which might change the genre, mood, location or other categorization the artist chooses.

CBS Taps iWidgets to Syndicate TV Shows on Social Networks

San Francisco - Social media firm iWidgets announced that it has partnered with CBS Interactive (NYSE: CBS) to syndicate a range of CBS TV episodes on sites including Facebook, MySpace and iGoogle. CBS will initially offer "CSI," "Amazing Race," "NCSI" and "Numb3rs," but over the next few months plans to syndicate a majority of its programming, iWidgets said.

 

ESPN Adds TV Clips to AOL's Bebo Social Network

New York - AOL-owned (NYSE: TWX) social network Bebo announced on Tuesday that Disney-owned (NYSE: DIS) ESPN is making clips of its television content available to U.S. site visitors. The offering will include clips of news and game footage, in addition to "SportsCenter Right Now," "Mike and Mike in the Morning," "Pardon the Interruption" and "Around the Horn."

Vodafone Enables Text, Picture Messaging via Facebook

London - Vodafone has launched a new U.K. service that lets its subscribers who are also Facebook users send text messages directly from their Facebook pages for ten pence per message, The Register reports. Users will also be able to send picture messages to mobile phones via Facebook for 30 pence each.

Thumbplay Launches Open Mobile Portal; Partners with Comcast

New York - Mobile entertainment distributor Thumbplay on Tuesday launched a beta of Thumbplay Open, an online marketplace where independent content owners can upload and sell their digital content. Users will generate $5 - $8 per new subscriber they attract to the Thumbplay service. Separately, New York-based Thumbplay said it has partnered with Comcast (NASD: CMCSA) to distribute mobile content through the company's Comcast.net site.

Boston - Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden have attracted 3.7 million views of their respective party convention speeches online (Obama: 3.3 million; Biden: 405,000), compared with 2.4 million views of Web videos of conventions speeches by Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin (McCain: 400,000; Palin: 2 million), according to a report from Internet video measurement service Visible Measures.

Also noteworthy is the return of NBC (NYSE: GE) TV shows to the iTunes Store, following a year-long absence that NBC attributed to Apple's inflexibility on pricing and bundling of content.

Washington - The Justice Department is gearing up to mount a significant challenge to Google's (NASD: GOOG) planned search-advertising deal with Yahoo (NASD: YHOO), The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. The department reportedly has hired Sanford Litvack, the former vice chairman of Disney, to examine the evidence and build a case against the potential deal.
