Amazon Extends Kindle Battery Life by 85%; Adds PDF Support

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) announced on Tuesday that it has enhanced the latest version of its Kindle e-book reader, adding 85% more battery life and a native PDF reader. The company said the Kindle now offers battery life of up to seven days, even with wireless turned on. The PDF reader, meanwhile, will allow Kindle customers to read documents in their original PDF format without conversion.

Microsoft: 2 Million Xbox Live Users Accessing Facebook

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) said that at least 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook over the past week, taking advantage of new integration of social media sites into the online game service, CNET News.com reported. Xbox Live claims 20 million total users. While no similar figures were given for Twitter logins, Microsoft spokesman David Dennis also told CNET that 1.7 million Xbox Live users had visited the company's new Zune marketplace to watch video.

Last.fm Gets 1 Million New Users via Xbox Live Integration

New York - Last.fm, the music streaming service owned by CBS (NYSE: CBS), said on Tuesday that its integration with Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Xbox Live online game service has resulted in nearly 1 million new registrants in the U.S. and U.K. over the past week. The company said it created more new user profiles during the first 24 hours of Xbox Live integration than at any other time in the service's history. The company added that Xbox Live users have streamed over 120 million minutes of music via Last.fm in the first week.

USA Today Inks Content Sharing Deal with Fark.com

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Tuesday that it has partnered with Fark.com, a news aggregator and edited social networking news site. Under the deal, USAToday.com's Tech section will become the exclusive host and sponsor of Fark.com's Geek page, which features technology articles from various online sources submitted by readers.

Shazam Debuts (RED) Special Edition Music ID Application

London - Shazam, a provider of mobile music identification services, on Tuesday debuted the Shazam (RED) application on Apple's App Store, 20% of the $4.99 purchase price of which will go towards the organization fighting HIV and AIDS in Africa. Shazam counts over 10 million iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide.

Santa Monica, Calif. - Adconion Media Group, the operator of an online ad and content network, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Joost, the streaming TV service founded by the creators of Kazaa and Skype. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 2007 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, Joost has raised about $50 million in funding for its peer-to-peer-based video distribution service.

Dell, China Mobile to Launch Mini 3i Smartphone This Month

Beijing, China - PC maker Dell (NASD: DELL) said on Monday that China Mobile will be the first operator to sell its new Mini 3i smartphone, set to launch in China later this month. The device features a 3.5-inch multi-touch display, 3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS and up to 32GB of memory. Dell said the Mini 3i is "the result of a year-long collaboration with China Mobile," which counts over 500 million subscribers.

MOG to Launch Music Subscription Service Next Week

Nintendo Debuts Wii Pay-per-View Service in Japan

Los Angeles - Nintendo has launched a pay-per-view programming service for its Wii video game console in Japan, Variety reports. The "Wii's Room" service launches with 12 content partners and around 120 titles, including episodes of "Sesame Street," which range in price from 33 cents to $5.60 each. Partners initially include Toei, TV Asahi, NHK Enterprises, NTV and Yoshimoto Kogyo, with Disney Japan slated to join by year's end.

Smashwords to Distribute E-books on Amazon Kindle Store

Los Gatos, Calif. - Smashwords, a publisher and distributor of independently-published e-books, announced on Monday that it will supply its catalog to Amazon.com's (NASD: AMZN) Kindle Store. Smashwords says it will pay authors and publishers 42.5% of the digital list price set by the author for e-book sales through Amazon. The company, which distributes over 4,800 titles from 2,200 authors and 80 small publishers, also recently signed distribution deals with Barnes & Noble and Sony.
