Cupertino, Calif. - Apple on Tuesday debuted a new $149, 1GB iPod Nano, adding a smaller capacity model to existing 2GB and 4GB versions of its flash memory-based portable music player line. Apple also announced lower pricing for its iPod shuffle, its smallest player and the only model without a display screen. The 512MB shuffle now costs $69, down from $99, while the 1GB shuffle was discounted from $129 to $99. "The only other company that has cheaper products out there is Creative," Gene Munster, an industry analyst with PiperJaffray, told the Associated Press. "So not only are Apple products the best, now they're also the cheapest, which makes it impossible for others to compete." Apple has also started a countdown to the one billionth song to be sold from its iTunes Music Store, which the company said last month has now sold 850 million songs. Prizes will be given at 100,000-song intervals along the way, with the purchaser of the 1 billionth song to receive an iMac, 10 iPods and a $10,000 gift certificate to the iTunes Store.

Lycos Europe Launches 1GB Email ServiceAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on May 18, 2004 - 8:09am.
London -- Beating out larger rival Google, Web portal Lycos Europe on Tuesday launched an email service with one gigabyte of storage space -- which would hold more than 550,000 emails, 2,000 photos or 250 songs. The ad-free service, which unlike Google's advertising-supported Gmail will cost about $6 per month, went live in the U.K. on Tuesday, with other European countries soon to follow, the company said. "The research we've done shows that privacy and security is incredibly important to consumers," said Lycos Europe Portals and Communications Vice President Alex Kovach. Google has been increasingly criticized in Europe, where customer advocates have argued that the ad technology Google will use to search within email texts in order to target ads at users violates user privacy laws. Yahoo also recently announced that it would increase the amount of free email storage it offers users from 4MB to 100MB.
New Paper-Thin, 1GB Storage Media Could Replace CDs in 5 YearsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on November 13, 2003 - 7:39am.
Leeds, England -- Researchers at Princeton University and Hewlett-Packard believe they have created new recordable media technology that is paper-thin, can hold up to 1GB of data and has the potential to make the compact disc obsolete within five years, Ananova.com reported. The research centers on "the discovery of a previously unknown property of a commonly used conductive plastic coating," called PEDOT. The device would be similar to a recordable CD crossed with a memory card, which can "plug directly into an electronic circuit and have no moving parts."
