While Microsoft is working on an iPod Killer, Apple is at work on an Excel killerAuthored by Jay Baage on July 28, 2006 - 12:18pm.
Over the last few weeks DMW has reported on rumors of Microsoft’s iPod killer, something that Microsoft finally confirmed this week, saying that their “Zune” music player will be released later this year. Now the Apple insider blog Think Secret is reporting that Apple is planning a counter attack with an Excel killer, a new spreadsheet application for the iWork '07 suite.
If it is true that they are working at the new spreadsheet, Apple is really hitting Microsoft where it hurts, competing directly with their bread-and-butter software applications. Especially as Excel is already coming under attack by a free spreadsheet program that was released by Google earlier this year.
My Take: I don’t think that Apple’s spreadsheet is a direct threat to the dominance that Excel has in the fun world of spreadsheets. If you look at Keynote, which is Apple’s recently released version of Powerpoint, it is in many ways a better software application. However, it is off to a pretty slow start and I don’t think that the majority of people will switch from using Powerpoint anytime soon.
So, I agree with one of the blogs out there that say that while this new application does not necessarily mean world domination for Apple, it will make the lives of Mac users much easier.
Bottom line: It is also one more thing that Microsoft will have to worry about and it shows initiative on the side of Apple.
