WSJ: Foundation 9 Raises $150 Million from Francisco PartnersAuthored by robert on May 31, 2006 - 7:30pm.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Foundation 9, the largest independent game developer in North America, has raised $150 million in a private round, funded by Francisco Partners. Games created by Foundation 9 have generated more than $1 billion in sales to consumers. Optimism in the games sector by private investors is being driven by two key trends: 1) multiple platforms, such as the PSP and mobile phones, are broadening and smoothing revenue streams for game publishers; and 2) online gaming is providing opportunities for direct-to-consumer distribution, with recurring revenue via subscriptions. Foundation 9 did not provide specifics on how the funding would be put to immediate use, though a larger portion of the funding would likely go toward acquisitions and other growth strategies.
