A Different Kind of Concert

It's being done in a different format, and the technology has been used for a similar idea, but I think it's time for someone to buy a movieStage Diving theater, gut the inside, turn it into a bar/concert venue, and use the big screen to broadcast concerts anywhere in the world in HD. Imagine: You live in San Francisco. Your favorite live act, Widespread Panic, is playing at Madison Square Garden. You can't go because of that small green obstacle, money, and that pesky thing no one can quite figure out how to overcome, time. But it doesn't bother you because it's Friday night and you're going out anyway, so you head to the theater playing the show on its big screen, pay $10 to get in, then mingle with a lively crowd and enjoy the show without all of the hassles associated with concerts.

I think it would work. Right now it's being done with symphonies and operas. And that's fine, but I think it could be done on a larger scale and for a different audience. It would also, of course, mean more money in the pockets of the artists and promoters. More importantly, fans would be able to see more shows and, perhaps, in a higher quality format than they otherwise would from the lawn seating at a concert venue.

The theater wouldn't be limited to current acts, though. You could show old shows like a Bob Marley concert in Kingston, or a Grateful Dead show in Stockholm, or Led Zepplin at the BBC, all in HD, and the theater could play the shows on nights they weren't broadcasting popular current acts. Hell, you could show a few shows in one night. Get warm with Pink Floyd, lube up the knee joints with a live Radiohead show, then get everyone in full noodle mode with a Widespread nightcapper. The concept would work for two reasons: 1) People like to drink, and 2) People like listening to music when they drink. Having the music live on a big screen would make for a bar setting I'd pay good money to see. Someone out there...Please do this...for me...and for all the poor boozers who have neither the time nor pocket money to see all the shows we want to see.
