How to Destroy a Song, Courtesy of Chevy and John Mellencamp

Chevy Truck Commercial I’m pulling my hair out over the disaster Chevy has made of John Mellencamp’s ridiculous and irrelevant tribute song “Our Country.”  Whoever was in charge of this campaign forgot to calculate the insanity they might cause in viewers, and the newfound dedication some of us have found to never buying a Chevy product again.  I’m serious about that.  Every time it comes on I want to throw my television against a wall.  What’s really sad about it, too, is that Mellencamp’s new album hasn’t even been released, which means we can expect to hear this God-awful piece of music at least 18 times a day for the next 9 months.  Just the thought of that is making me break out into a cold sweat.  I feel a burning hatred brewing toward Chevy and Cougar Mellencamp.

I’m definitely not the only one reacting this way.  It feels like a practical joke at this point.  I used to work on the maintenance crew at a golf course in college and one of the greens keepers got fired one day.  He went and got his truck, and proceeded to do doughnuts on 8 greens before the cops finally got there to shut him down.  That’s what I feel like is happening at Chevy.  Someone got fired and was given 2 weeks to pack it up.  So instead of going out quietly they’re doing doughnuts on my television screen, buying up ad spots on every commercial break of every television station in the country, and overloading us with one of the worst commercial campaigns we’ve ever seen.

Somebody, please, I’m begging you…pull the plug on the project.  We get it.  This is our country.  This is our truck.  We understand.  Now leave us alone, and bury that song.  You already killed it a month ago.  Now give it an honorable funeral.  While it still has a semblance of pride.  Please.  You’re torturing us.
