Yahoo Japan Dumps Microsoft, Signs Search Deal With Google

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo Japan, a joint venture between the company and Softbank, has signed a deal to switch from using Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) search results to Google's (NASD: GOOG), All Things D reported. Under the terms, Yahoo Japan will use Google's search results, in addition to Google's search ad technology platform.

USC Survey Finds 0% of Internet Users Would Pay for Twitter

Los Angeles - A new study from the Center for Digital Future at USC's Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism found that 49% of respondents have used free micro-blog sites like Twitter -- but 0% of those polled said they would pay to use Twitter. "Such an extreme finding that produced a zero response underscores the difficulty of getting Internet users to pay for anything that they already receive for free," said Jeffrey Cole, the center's director.

Bandcamp Artist Sells $15K of Music, Merch in 90 Seconds

Los Angeles - Independent recording artist Amanda Palmer sold $15,000 worth of music and merchandise in 90 seconds on Tuesday via DIY Web store Bandcamp, Billboard reported. Palmer, who also plays in indie duo the Dresden Dolls, sold 4,000 copies of a digital EP entitled, "Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on her Magical Ukelele."

New York - One-time Twitter "hater" Kanye West has joined the service, in the midst of a promotional push for his forthcoming album that saw him drop into the offices of both that company and Facebook this week, according to reports. West had previously blogged that "Everything that Twitter offers, I need less of," and wrote of his eschewing of the service that, "I ONLY BLOG 5 PER CENT OF WHAT I'M UP TO IN THE FIRST PLACE. I'M ACTUALLY SLOW DELIVERING CONTENT BECAUSE I'M TOO BUSY ACTUALLY BEING CREATIVE MOST OF THE TIME."

Report: Mobile Location Services Not Ripe for Marketers Yet

Cambridge, Mass. - Just 4 in 100 online adults has ever used a location-based mobile service like Foursquare, Gowalla or Loopt, and only 1% of these people "check-in" on such services more than once a week, according to a report from market research firm Forrester.

Yahoo: comScore Underreported June Page View, Duration Metrics

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) announced on Tuesday that Internet audience measurement firm comScore underreported its U.S. page views for June by more than one billion, and its duration metrics by more than 850 million minutes. The corrected numbers mean Yahoo page views were down 4.7% in June, rather than the 7.4% originally reported by comScore, and duration was down 4.3% rather than the reported 6.4%.

San Francisco - Apple (NASD: AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs addressed growing concerns over iPhone 4 antenna reception issues at an hastily arranged press conference on Friday, pledging to provide any upset consumers a free $29 "bumper" case that's said to alleviate reception woes. "We would love to answer your questions today," Jobs told reporters at the outset of the event, which was live blogged by CNET News.com and came at the end of a week where Consumer Reports said after testing the iPhone 4 it couldn't recommend purchasing the device -- due to what it called a hardware glitch with the exterior antenna.

BBC.com to Localize Content for U.S. Audience, Advertisers

London - The BBC has begun using geo-location technology to present a customized version of its website to U.S. and other overseas visitors, in a bid to attract local advertising dollars. BBC .com launched a new D.C. news bureau, while the TV section of the site now directs U.S. and other North American visitors to the BBC's 12 international channels. BBC.com is drawing 17.4 million monthly unique visitors from the U.S., and 57.8 million globally, according to comScore.
