Microsoft Needs to Step It Up

Microsoft is lagging far behind other IT companies when it comes to helping save the environment. It ranks at the bottom of Greenpeace's Cool IT Challenge, which scores how much IT companies are doing to address climate change. IT companies can help cut global greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 15 percent by 2020. Greenpeace’s Challenge uses scorecards to evaluate a dozen major IT companies in five areas: Public Climate Speech, Political Advocacy, Climate Solutions, Reducing Companies’ Own Emissions Target, and Renewable Energy Use. In addition to producing the technology necessary for the implementation of climate solutions and reducing their company’s carbon footprint, the leaders of these powerful companies can use their influence to impact key political leaders and call for a strong agreement at the Climate Change Negotiations in Copenhagen this December. Greenpeace will update Cool IT regularly and release the next assessment in August/September. To find out more about Cool IT and learn about who is winning the Challenge, go to the Greenpeace website!

SEO for Bing

Microsoft's stance on search engine optimization really doesn't appear to be all that different from Google's. You're not going to get the same results on both Google and Bing in many cases, but that is after all why the two can co-exist. The real difference is in how the results are presented, and not as much in how the two determine quality and relevancy. Bing and Google have separate algorithms, but both like quality, relevant links and good content, as opposed to deception and spam. Bing in fact, hasn't really changed much (from Live Search) in terms of crawling.

Comment posted to "Apple iPhone 3GS Costs $179 to Make"

It's not ALL profit

As quoted from article: "Apple then, makes about $400 per unit in profit on U.S. sales of the device." I don't doubt that the iPhone 3GS cost $179 to make. As numerous reports have shown, if you break down the cost of each and every "ingredient" to the phone, they sum up to this numbern. That's fine, and it's totally relevant to the components of the physical phone, but it's only a small part of the equation. What about all the other "ingredients" that went into creating this phone, and into creating any technological device? Consider the cost of the research and development. Consider the cost of the technical staff who support the phone. Consider the cost of the accountants, the marketing staff, the cost of the building they all work in, the energy bills, their employee's heath care, and the legal team who wrote the terms and conditions No, this is not a sob story about how "Apple has it so hard." Not at all, I'm sure they do just fine. But to call the remaining $400 "profit" is to simply ignore the realities of what it means to run a hardware and software company in 2009.

Comment posted to "Web Listeners to Public Radio's KCRW Eclipse Radio Audience"

Will Lewis is KCRW's Secret Weapon

I worked at KCRW for over a decade on the programming side and I have to say that working with Will was one of the most amazing parts of my experience in those years. I believe he is the brains behind many of the station's most solid programming decisions over the years. I want to leave this comment anonymously because I left the station in a contentious way. One of the problems of the place is that people who are right in front of each other aren't seen for their value, because people are so focused on the Hip and Cool and Powerful--and only look to people who *appear* to be cool. Will doesn't look like anything but a regular guy. He shuffles around in kind of the same way Joe Frank used to, in a very unassuming way, and people who are younger and less intellectually engaged tend not to see beyond the apprearances of things. Will keeps a low profile because that's the way to survive there, but make no mistake, without Will Lewis, many of the things people have loved about KCRW would never have happened. Ruth Seymour is the character who takes all the flak and gets the glory; Will stays behind the scenes. He stays in hotels during pledge drives and pitches for funds all morning and all night, only sleeping briefly between. KCRW is so much the product of his genius, especially the web operations, that it really seems someone should say something. Will was the person who picked Chris Douridas' tape out of a box of discarded cassettes, recognized the talent Chris has, and convinced Ruth to hire him to do Morning Becomes Eclectic. Ruth is also brilliant in her own ways and everyone knows the determination she's brought to make the station what it is. She's the flamboyant one who gets noticed, but she's savvy enough to have recognized Will's brilliance and to trust it. I'm sorry to do this anonymously. I think it's better that way because a compliment from me might be considered a curse---I am pretty sure my name is a bad word in that basement. I believe Will was responsible for the advances I made in the company when I was there, in part if not in whole. I only realized this years later, because leaving was so upsetting. It takes a long time to get things into perspective, and at KCRW there is a warped reality which is deeply embedded in the minds of those who spend their days there every day. When you are surrounded by people who believe certain things, it becomes difficult not to believe them yourself, unless you have strong outside influences. Not *seeing* people like Will for what they are is a major problem. Once you get out into the air and out of the basement, the world really opens up and you see how amazing Los Angeles is and how much of that cultural richness KCRW is missing. Will should get a six month sabbatical ---PAID--- and go out into Los Angeles and see all the stuff that's going on that could make for great and powerful programming. I don't have any purpose for posting this except that I have always felt bad he wasn't more recognized for what he does there, and that includes, by myself. Will Lewis rocks. He's just _one_ of a number of incredible people who don't get the recognition they deserve. I could give a number of other names. That place had real magic for a long time, I don't know if it does now, because I can't listen. And I'll put my name on that if anyone ever asks me.

Comment posted to "Report: Sony to Reveal New PSP at E3; Release Slated for Fall"

sony and their products

I think that sony has a great platform (PS3) but their hand-held system sucks. How come they don't have a camera on it. They could make it have the capability to show your face in a two way cam talking session. That would be new, or what about giving it an internal hardrive...a big one. phone capabilities. SOMETHING, but instead they just make it ...lighter...and lighter or slimmer. How LAME, who cares its light enough. It doesn't increase the game play so WHO CARES. The BIGGEST issue with the system is they seem to apparently not have enough space on those disks to make RPG's. I mean common. I played Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core or Core Crisis whatever and it was SOOOO Limited. You wanna know why psp games don't sell? Cuz the majority of sony fans play rpg's and guess what "THEY DON'T MAKE ANY". When they get that through their heads, if ever, they'll probably start selling games. Co-op, another problem. If they want games to be co-op they should make them storyline co-op. Not just give a few levels of co-op gameplay. What is that anyway, saying like "well we only want you to have a "limited" amount of fun with someone else, but not too much" HOW STUPID. The playstation 3 is becomming more and more disappointing as well. I don't know when the gamming world lost its guts but I remember when gamming companies "competed" to be the best at making the consumer happy and not trying to show who's go the best graphics. Wow, here's a game that I get to look at my face and it looks so real...but thats all it does. I have more fun playing super mario than playing games on the ps3. Not only that, but they only push out games with 720 and call those good graphics. Are they mad??? xbox is pushing games with 1080 why not ps3? The biggest upset is that square enix is releasing FF13 and ...oooOOoooo...woooOOOOooww... the graphics....oh but i forgot to mention how retarded the storyline is. What has gotten into ppl for real, seriously. sincerely, A Mad RPGr

Great Commentary Craig/Gee. I would love to see a 'Throwback' edition of Facebook where I can say/do what my mind really wants to do, with out the flack of my grandmother or boss.

Comment posted to "Guest Column: Why Facebook Will Fail"

Agree with the Premise

While you offer a very technical and trade-jargony argument which is relevant for the audience of this website, I tend to agree with you on a more fundamental premise. Facebook, in my mind, has 'struggled' ever since it strayed from it's core foundation of being a community for college students. While the financial numbers and advertising revenue may disagree with that notion, many of the users that made Facebook successful at it's founding find themselves alienated and yearning for the 'Old' Facebook - one that did not include their parents, co-workers, crazy Uncles and pre-teen cousins. (I think the idea of a limited-time 'Throwback' edition of Facebook would be a great idea) Those original users propelled Facebook into the go-to avenue for boasting about last night's adventures. Now as the line is blurred between work, family and friends, the original audience is going to find another community at some point outside of Facebook. Additionally, Twitter one-upped Facebook on a key feature, catching them flat-footed on a relatively simple idea - quick status updates that were predominantly featured on a users screen. Just like any company, when you become too big and too diversified for your own good in your search for growth and revenue, you inevitably wind up alienating people that will soon find a more useful alternative. The free market always reigns supreme. Who would have thought myspace would be headed the way of the Wooly Mammoth?

At $15/$10/$5 per month (depending on service) I would see no reason I'd ever care to stop paying and lose my music.

Freezing Full Tilt Poker Funds from US players

The USA is against anything that they cannot tax. Cigarettes, Alcohol, and gambling within the country our legal because they can tax it in a much easier manner. Yet marijuana and online gambling are illegal. Is it because the government aren't receiving their cut? Do they only care about matters that pay money? These issues should have to do with freedom, not money. At the age of 18 I started walking into casino's in Washington State, yet at 24 I can't choose to gamble online if I want to? I can drink myself to death, yet can't smoke marijuana? I do not understand the country I live in. I do not understand. But even in this century, I am a slave. Many may disagree with that statement. But the only reason for my existence is to suit the government (in their eyes). -Tanner

internet gambling

I agree that it is set up for the player to lose. But I would also say that the stock market is a gamble and I know that most people would not want us to quite gambling on the stock market. Starting a new bussness is a gamble also but that is what this great country is based on. People gambling and succecding. Usually this country rewards a great gamble with great payoff. Why we cannot play cards online is a joke. Thanks for nothing I do not need anyone holding my hand saying it is for my own good I do not play cards online cause i may lose more money than i put in. It is like we should all wear seat belts it is a law now in most states if not all. That law says it is for our safety but bull crap we all know it is for the insurance companys. It is nice to pay insurance and never ever ever have to pay anyone back for there investment. True that is no gamble at all. Well maybe this is a move to keep people going to the places like Vegas or gambling boats or atlantic City. As if the online gambling is taking away from there profit at all. Sounds like the mob not wanting anyone moving in on there turf making money. And the goverment is protecting it. So thank you very much i can decide if i would like to play a online game for 2 dollars a game. Thank you sir for helping us try to get back some of our personal rights. "The most important rights in this great country." The american honest people can take only so many hits before we explode so leave us alone for gods sake before we get really mad and don't hold my hand anymore.
