Vigil takes on 40K MMO

I really hope Vigil steers this game towards the direction of Necromunda; the closed quarters nature of the combat envisioned in that game system will offset all the problems they will face with shooting. Leave squad tactics to the RTS (DOW), and let shooty players get their kicks for nothing but ranged shooting and massive battles there. But if shooting must reign in any 40K MMO, hopefully it doesn't reign supreme. Games Workshop worked really hard to revamp the tabletop game a few years back because shooty "armies" were dominating, and they seem to have found a balance with the recent game systems. I hope that Vigil recognizes what the GW community had to go through to get this "right", and learns those lessons before setting down the foundation for this MMO. Some simple moves the right or wrong way in the early stages of development will really set the tone for this game; will you spend all your time hiding from snipers, or will axe-murderers be too powerful? Good luck, Vigil, a LOT of folks will be watching.

Think of the typical 30-second spot that makes up the inventory of a sitcom. Most of the inventory is wasted. If it's a woman's product, and half the people watching are men, then half of the money is wasted. The promise online is this: ask for a little information to give away almost free inventory, but target it. Google has made billions not from mass marketing, but from micro marketing. why couldn't a show deliver an ad to a person logged in? It's a bit harder sell, but that promise has me a believer in the future. The big and obvious question is this: how much information will people be willing to give away to get content?

So many people cry about the entertainment industry struggling right now. While CD sales might be down, other forms of media sales (primarily digital) are way up. The digital age has lead to a power shift. Where entertainment companies once dictated what media people consumed, people now have the tools to decide this for themselves. The question is, 'how long will it take the entertainment industry to figure these changes out.' How we consume media.

Interesting article. I think that this decrease in spending on entertainment has a lot to do with the fact that we consume media differently than we did even a year ago. iTunes just passed WalMart as the largest distributor of music in the world, ie CDs are quickly becoming a thing of the past, while mp3s, etc are becoming hugely popular. Also, why buy music when everything's available for free on places like myspace. People are consuming media in the form of ringtones and downloadable music videos. We're downloading or renting movies instead of going to the theaters. The money that people once spent on media is still there, the change is in where or how we spend that money now. We're too addicted to entertainment, it will never go away.

At last Web 2.0 Generate a winner in B2B social media!

The sale of Boston-based Generate Inc. to Dow Jones on Friday is the first piece of good news venture capital can point to in B2B social media space. There have been surprisingly few successful exits in the space in the 5 years since the funding of the first wave of B2B social media companies like LinkedIn. Generate brings together next-generation search and extraction technologies with great client relationship mapping and is clearly a second generation play. Generate’s approach has been to carefully look at the experience of early entrants like TrueAdvantage to locksmith a superior solution that really works for sales. LinkedIn continues to build a great franchise but no exit yet, despite rumors of acquisition last year with Murdoch’s News Corp. There are three types of Web 2.0 plays in the space: · Better search engine and organization of online content for sales - like Generate · Dynamic community - like LinkedIn · Knowledge trading from the community - like NetProspex LinkedIn is popular with business development executives and for sales people in relationship sales environments where business introductions matter. But LinkedIn doesn’t help transactional sales executives, who don’t have the leverage to get someone to open their network for the process of selling lower ticket items. This is a big space as the vast majority of B2B transactions are below $50k. NetProspex, also out of Boston is another second generation Web 2.0 business that parallels the Generate approach. The first entrants in contact trading, like Jigsaw are finding that data quality is just as important as trading. Without it, abandonment rates make it difficult for a user-maintained system to get enough users on the system to keep the data clean. Like Generate, NetProspex has used the lessons learned to build a better mousetrap. NetProspex allows sales people to trade their internal prospect lists, but scrubs the data during and after the transaction. Sales contacts are a perishable commodity, a bit like fish…they soon go off. NetProspex technologies filter and validate contributed data to greater than 99% accuracy. Why is this important? Sales needs a higher level of accuracy, because it can get really irritating if every other phone number or email address is wrong. NetProspex expects that with the quality issue resolved, there is no reason why sales people shouldn’t have a great prospect map of their territory to find those customers they don’t yet have. It’s an exciting market and a very large opportunity, and as these second generation businesses realize the potential in the B2B social media space, more success stories will follow.

Sirius XM Merger should pass and not be delayed any further.

20-Apr-08.. Question to Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), How is this merger, of two "Pay-For" Sat.Radio services, in his view going to be, in his quote "This merger is contrary to the public interest. I hope that the FCC will stand up for competition in the public interest and deny this merger,"? When the DOJ had found to be right the opposite? Again... I pose yet another question... How much funds are being placed in your pockets by those who would rather see this merger fail for there on reasons for eliminating there competitors? Let's quit this BS and the exchange of monies to which only those Washington Bureaucrats are just supplementing there tax paid salaries. This merger will have no effect accept to those that pay for having this as a supplement to other forms of entrainment that are accessible without having to make subscription payments. Roommates.com

The Court’s decision is narrowly limited to conduct by website operators that is allegedly to violate laws prohibiting discriminatory practices, in which it is not the content itself (e.g. “I am white, straight, and Buddhist.”) which results in liability but the type of content (e.g., the race, sexual orientation, or religion of a potential home purchaser) which is elicited, developed, and then published. Roommates.com was alleged to have required subscribers to provide and publish certain information in a context in which that type of information may not legally be used – thus, the website “developed, in whole or in part” the content and was not entitled to immunity under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

This is not at all similar to a website eliciting comments or posts about a particular subject (e.g., personal dating experiences with particular men on dontdatehimgirl.com) but is much closer to a website asking its users to provide specific and unlawful comments (e.g., false assertions that particular men have criminal records or untreated sexually transmitted diseases). In fact, the Court distinguished the case before it from many others in which Section 230 protection did apply by noting that in those cases the website operator “did not design its system around the dissemination of unlawful content.” Fair Housing Council of San Fernando Valley v. Roommates.com, ___ F.3d ___, 2008 WL 879293, *9 (9th Cir. 2008).

In the end, the Court’s opinion is not all that earth-shattering. It’s crafted to be narrowly applicable to the particular case decided and should not alter the Section 230 analysis in most future cases.

Comment posted to "Comcast Pushes "P2P Bill of Rights and Responsibilities""

Interesting timing - Comcast and Pando -- please

Today, Comcast Corporation and Pando Networks announced that they will lead the industry to create a "P2P Bill of Rights and Responsibilities" for users and ISPs. With an FCC hearing on Comcast's anti-peer-to-peer practices scheduled for later this week, this is hardly a surprise. Once again, Comcast makes another sweetheart-sounding deal, but at the wrong time, and with the wrong sweetheart.

It takes a special kind of arrogance for a company that sells Internet Access to team up with another company that sells Content Delivery and together decide what rights and responsibilities that the world's Internet users should have.

As in its earlier "deal" with BitTorrent, Inc., Comcast's announcement today doesn't change any of the facts it faces: in 2006, it assured Congress that network neutrality laws were not necessary, saying it would not "deny, delay, or degrade" its customers in order to deal with traffic congestion. Within a year it was caught secretly doing exactly that! Even after a long string of deceptive and deflective statements and tactics, Comcast continues to degrade their traffic today.

As was the case in the BitTorrent "deal," neither Comcast Corporation nor Pando Networks represents the millions of customers and other members of the Internet community who were impacted when Comcast secretly launched its anti-P2P attack.

Today's announcement comes less than 48 hours from the US Federal Communication Committee's public hearing at Stanford University. There, the FCC is scheduled to hear from two panels of experts followed by two hours of public testimony on the Comcast incident specifically as well as similar industry practices in general.

No doubt we will soon see Comcast and Pando Networking executives start to explain why today's "deal" signals that Network Neutrality regulation is not needed in the Broadband Marketplace.

When Steven Vander Ark's publisher, RDR Books, told him it was okay to publish a printed version of Vander Ark's Harry Potter Lexicon Web site, which is largely derived from work by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Vander Ark accepted that without further question and proceeded with the project. That cavalier attitude is no surprise when one considers the source of Vander Ark's Web site in the first place. When did it become okay to lift someone else's copyrighted material and present it as one's own? That's why, “in the name of scholastic pursuit”, I've made a copy of Vander Ark's Web site to use as my own Web site. Oh, it's okay. I've changed the name of the site and reorganized it a little. Chartering dangerous waters....

I found this extremely interesting... cannot wait to see what this company is up to. Giving a voice to company employees... Enabling bubbling cases of sexual harrassment lawsuits to become corporate soap operas and reality TV? In any case, this sure is a potential landmine.

Transforming Wikipedia into music streaming service

You can listen to the song of artist from wikipedia page if you have Qbox toolbar. When you click the button in toolbar, Qbox streams music in MySpace, YouTube, and Bebo. For example, if you lookup Norah Jones in Wikipedia, Qbox brings music from MySpace,YouTube, and Bebo for you to listen directly.

Get a decent pic of your artist in

Another useful page for music industry people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Contact_us/Photo_submission Wikipedia is very strict on only allowing free-content images of living people, so most pics of celebrities end up being fan snapshots - "fair use" or with-permission promo pics aren't allowed. If agents, etc. can drag themselves to release a good photo under a proper free licence (e.g. CC-by-sa), then the Wikipedia page is improved, they look better and everyone benefits.

This version of Bond is a joyous surprise for me - my youthful daydreams have been vindicated and at last fully satisfied. There are indeed elements added to the plot, but they are completely congruent with it.

First fiasco for Live Nation Dubai. They booked Media City to do Avril Lavigne concert in May but cancelled when they found out that Bon Jovi is coming only 2 days before. Seems like who ever is running their local office is clueless.

The suppliers will be qualified out until only a few remain. This is known as down select in the industry. It is normal to go into the due diligence stage with two suppliers to maintain the competition.

My God, how can you say such

My God, how can you say such a thing? Chris Crocker is the LAST thing we need on TV. Can you imagine kids trying to ACT like that freak?! It makes me sick just thinking about it! Do we really want his horrid views woven into America's already tainted moral fiber? I think not.

Comment posted to "Live Nation Signs 12-Year Deal with U2"

How many more millions does Live Nation have?

I mean how many ten year, $100+ million deals are in the tank for Live Nation? U2 will surely make investors money back...but profits? Wouldn't it be great to read these nagging record/live contracts? And last, the big record companies fucked it all up over and over. Do you really think Live Nation is going to serve this market well? Hmm. Mays family verses the music = traditional failure!

user profiling not streams

people seem to focus on the last.fm streams, but the fundamental premise of last.fm is that it records the title/artist of songs members listen to, not the actual music. The value is in the recording and collating of consumer music profiles and what they do with that. The streams are an add on service. Last.fm was popular well before they added on the streaming function.

Tarzan Economics/James Boyle

If I am not mistaken, Jim Griffin did not come up with the term "Tarzan Economics." I believe he swiped it from James Boyle, a law professor at Duke University. Search out the audio/video of Boyle's keynote a few years back at the Berkman Center's Beyond Broadcast conference for a source and also a fantastic speech.

Retroactive

Last.FM negotiated retroactive deals with all the big labels. So the Audit is probably moot. I guess they'll find all this out during the audit.

That is, companies that are pretty much a pure play in GPS for cars, and that trade on the stock market. Comment posted to "Analysis: HD VMD - Better Red Than Dead?"

Existing Red Ray capability of DVD

My associates and I intend to make a business of fostering the use of Red Ray DVD to distribute HD disk content. We have developed a fine and unique 3D stereo system for both Blue-Ray and Red-Ray disk players. We make glasses in China, like colored sun glasses. We shoot on 1080p video, and reduce to 480p for the red version, which can then be "line-doubled" to 1080p. We will offer a certification for disk publishers called: ULTRA-DEF-Pro. $200 will cover a title with unlimited copies. The consumer can be assured that the disk is 16x9 wide-screen, in 480p (progressive) scan, They can play it in the red laser mode on a Blu-ray player, or on a cheaper progressive scan, "line-doubling" player with HDMI cabling, going in all cases to an HD flat display. Full on 1080p sets will look very good in flat or our new 3D. Glasses for the new 3D will only cost about $6 per plastic pair. The disks can be manufactured for under a dollar with all DvD and ULTRA-DEF-Pro rights paid. Our red ray running time is about 464 minutes per disk.
