Las Vegas - MobiTV, a provider of mobile TV delivery technology and programming, is demonstrating its unified multicast and unicast TV service for the WiMax standard this week at the Consumer Electronics Show. WiMax was developed to connect Wi-Fi hotspots, and serve as a wireless alternative to cable and DSL broadband. The company also announced a deal with Sprint, to power a mobile TV service for the wireless carrier's joint venture with a number of cable TV companies. Finally, MobiTV said it partnered with major record label Warner Music Group, to create branded mobile TV channels for Warner artists like Linkin Park and Red Hot Chili Peppers that offer both music videos and original video content. Las Vegas - SanDisk Corporation, a maker of media storage devices, MP3 players and other products, on Tuesday introduced technology that uses a USB drive to port videos on a PC for viewing on a television. The USBTV technology uses a small, flash memory-based player that can download and store video from a PC, and then plug into virtually any TV for playback. A multimedia processor converts stored files into various TV video/audio formats for direct playback without having to make changes to the TV. Las Vegas - Motorola has signed an agreement with major record label Warner Music Group that will result in the creation of digital products, marketing campaigns and strategic planning across multiple devices. Under the deal, Motorola will get exclusive content like pre-loaded tracks, over-the-air songs, ringtones, ringback tones and mobile music videos. For example, the MOTO Experience Pack, expected in the second half of 2007, will combine several music-based products from a Warner artist in a single file downloaded to a user's phone. [more..]
Las Vegas - Gracenote, a provider of CD identification and music database technologies, announced that it has developed a new standard for classical music display on digital media devices. The company worked with classical music experts, labels and several prestigious orchestras on the CMI format, which expands typical album, track and artist information to include composer, conductor, ensemble, soloist, work, movement and catalog number elements. Gracenote said it has already converted more than 10,000 of the most popular classical music albums into the CMI format, and will work with labels going forward to input new albums into its database using the standard. Atlanta - Intent Media Works, a provider of media distribution through the Internet and peer-to-peer networks, said on Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with Canadian record label Nettwerk Music Group, home to artists including Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan. Under the deal, Intent will distribute Nettwerk artists' songs and music videos via a variety of websites, file-sharing networks and social network sites. Las Vegas - Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with Canadian film studio Lionsgate, to distribute high-definition films to video game consoles through its Xbox Live Video Marketplace. The service lets gamers purchase and download movies and TV shows to their Xbox 360 video game consoles over the Internet. Lionsgate films to be added to the service include "The Blair Witch Project," "Saw III" and "Requiem for a Dream." New York - Zoom In Online, a community for creative professionals, announced on Tuesday that it will produce the first publicly accessible podcasts of panels offered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Washington - XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite radio service to more than 7.6 million subscribers, plans to open a new customer call center in the Southwest Virginia town of Galax, U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher announced. The opening of the facility, which will be operated by Results Global Services, will create 255 new jobs. Redwood City, Calif. - A group of former developers from Electronic Arts on Tuesday announced the formation of an independent game development firm, Sniper Studios. The team includes president, CEO and co-founder Matt McKnight, who worked at EA for 11 years on titles like "Madden NFL," "James Bond 007" and "NCAA Football," in addition to former EA staffers Jeff Hasson, who will serve as general manager, and Ted Fitzgerald, who becomes Sniper's vice president of production and business development. Sunnyvale, Calif. - Video game publisher Activision on Tuesday announced details of the downloadable songs and other content for developer Red Octane's "Guitar Hero II" Xbox 360 air guitar game.
