Washington - National Geographic announced on Monday that it has acquired The Green Guide, a website and newsletter that offers practical advice on how consumers can be more eco-conscious. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1994, The Green Guide will now publish new and expanded online content, including how-to videos, on NationalGeographic.com. "We want to offer creative and practical ways to protect the planet," said Tim Kelly, president and CEO of National Geographic Ventures.  "This is a terrific marriage that joins The Green Guide's actionable editorial with the deep resources of National Geographic." Seoul, Korea - Korean electronics firm Samsung on Monday announced plans to introduce a wireless set-top box that will deliver high-definition TV on home networks. Samsung partnered with chipmakers STMicroelectronics and Metalink on the SMT-H6155, which currently has no release date. [more..]
Palo Alto, Calif. - Video-sharing site Metacafe announced on Monday the launch of a new channel, created by Hollywood producer Steven Bochco ("Hill Street Blues," "NYPD Blue"), that will feature twenty-somethings sharing video confessionals on topics like "My First Time" and "Most Embarrassing Moment." In addition to videos produced by Bochco, the Café Confidential channel will encourage users to contribute their own similar videos, which will be eligible for revenue-sharing from Metacafe. [more..]
Redwood City, Calif. - Frengo, a publisher of text message-based mobile games, on Monday introduced its service and announced a partnership with Boost Mobile. The Redwood City, Calif.-based company said its games revolve around sports, celebrities and pop culture, and are intended to enhance social networking. Frengo launched a text alert-based game for Boost Mobile subscribers, which lets them predict winners in the NCAA college basketball tournament; the company added that its titles work on all major U.S. wireless networks. Hollywood - ClipSyndicate, a provider of video syndication services, said on Monday that it has signed a deal to syndicate stand-up and sketch comedy clips from Comedy Time Network across its network of websites. Comedy Time Network's mobile video clips are already distributed to over 3 million subscribers worldwide. ClipSyndicate also aggregates video from Bloomberg, AP, Fox TV and Clear Channel. [more..]
Herndon, Va. - Ruckus Network, a provider of legitimate campus music and entertainment download services, announced on Monday that it has partnered with Tremor Media to serve video ads to users of its service. The deal will allow Ruckus to integrate targeted video ads into its content library, which includes 2.7 million songs, as well as 4,500 movies and videos. [more..]
Seattle - Medio Systems announced on Monday the launch of its pay-per-click mobile advertising network, which will initially drive ad placement on search results pages for mobile virtual network operator Amp'd Mobile. Seattle-based Medio said its technology takes into account search behavior, click-through history, user demographics, geography and behavioral trending analysis when delivering ads to consumers. Los Angeles - Nexon America, the U.S. arm of the Korean multiplayer online game developer, announced on Monday that its "MapleStory" title has surpassed 3 million registered users in North America, making for a total of nearly 60 million worldwide. Rockville, Md. - Bethesda Softworks on Monday shipped its PlayStation 3 version of "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" to retailers. The game, which features character voices from actors including Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean, was released for Windows and Xbox 360 in March 2006. [more..]
