San Francisco - Publisher IDG announced on Monday that it will shutter the print edition of its 29-year-old InfoWorld technology business magazine, opting instead for an online-only version. The magazine's last issue will be mailed to subscribers and arrive on newsstands next week. "We're not going anywhere. We are merely embracing a more efficient delivery mechanism -- the Web -- at InfoWorld.com," said editor-in-chief Steve Fox. "You can still get all the news coverage, reviews, analysis, opinion, and commentary that InfoWorld is known for. Orlando, Fla. - Texas Instruments announced on Monday that it will demonstrate its new DLP "pico-projector," a tiny video projector that can potentially be integrated into cell phones, digital cameras and portable media players, at the 2007 CTIA Wireless convention this week in Orlando. San Diego - Wireless technology developer Qualcomm on Monday introduced a new, low-cost mobile broadband chip that it says will help foster user-generated content on cell phones. The company said its QSC6085 will deliver more than ten times the speed of its existing EV-DO technology, or up to 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link and 3.1 Mbps on the forward link. Qualcomm added that network operator China Unicom and handset maker Sanyo have announced support for the technology. "By utilizing the fastest CDMA2000 data speeds available today on both the forward and reverse links, the QSC6085 will help drive the fundamental shift of content being generated by the user," said Reiner Klement, senior director of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. Online coverage will be available through AT&T's Blue Room broadband site, while TV coverage will be offered on its U-verse digital TV service, and mobile coverage through Cingular. Orlando, Fla. - WiderThan, a unit of RealNetworks that delivers mobile entertainment services, announced on Monday that it has signed new deals to power mobile music services for Helio and Rogers Wireless. WiderThan's Music-on-Demand platform will allow Helio Music members to download full tracks and ringback tones over-the-air to their phones. The platform will also be used by Canada's Rogers Wireless to power the company's MusicStore, which offers both a la carte and subscription-based downloads. [more..]
Hudson Valley, N.Y. - Pump Audio, a provider of licensed independent music for use in commercial productions, said on Monday that it has partnered with Snocap, which operates a digital music registry and powers download stores for artists on sites like MySpace. Under the deal, Snocap will promote the Pump Audio service to artists who register their songs with Snocap. London - Japanese video game publisher Namco Bandai has signed a deal with Sony to use the Cell processor found in the PlayStation 3 to power an arcade game title, GamesIndustry.biz reported, citing an article in The Mainichi Daily News. The first arcade game to feature the Cell will be Namco Bandai's "Tekken 6," scheduled for release later this year. The company has previously used PlayStation 2 technology in older arcade machines. New York - Mobile game publisher Gameloft plans to expand into publishing games for BlackBerry mobile devices, The New York Times reported on Monday. Research in Motion, which manufactures the BlackBerry, counts about 8 million subscribers. Gameloft titles for the Blackberry will include a version of its "Asphalt: Urban GT 2" racing game, "Pro Golf 2007 feat.
