TiVo Ups Price of "Lifetime" Membership to Program Guide Service

San Jose, Calif. -- TiVo, maker of personal video recorders that let viewers pause and record live television, has raised the cost for purchasing a "lifetime" membership to its service -- which automatically updates TV program listings -- from $249 to $299. The fee covers the "life" of the actual device, not the subscriber, and averages about four years, according to the company. The price hike is likely an effort to get consumers to opt for its more lucrative $12.95 monthly service.
