Vienna, Va. - Two months after acquiring San Francisco's Bayosphere, Backfence, a Virginia-based company building a network of community websites on which readers contribute the content, said on Thursday that it has formally launched its first site in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company's new site, in Palo Alto, features local news, photographs, reviews and events contributed by members of the community, as well as a blog on local issues and technology by journalist Dan Gillmor, the founder and director of grassroots media organization the Center for Citizen Media. The company also has named Mark Loundy, a veteran of UPI, the AP and the Los Angeles Times, as its Bay Area content manager. Backfence plans to launch four additional community sites in the Bay Area over the next few months.
