Berkeley, Calif. - The former CEO of CD identification technology firm Gracenote on Tuesday announced the launch of MOG, an online music destination that allows users to compare their musical tastes with an online community. Headed by David Hyman, who in addition to heading Gracenote was also previously senior vice president of marketing at MTV Interactive, MOG has to date raised $1.4 million in financing. The site can automatically scan a user's hard drive and create a listing of what albums and songs are owned, while widgets allow users to display what song they are currently listening to, and create lists for recently played and top songs of the week or month. MOG also provides 30-second sound samples of every song, as well as direct links to iTunes and Amazon for download and CD purchases. MOG also offers other blog functions, like the ability to embed audio samples and video clips with text posts, and customizable skins designed by pop artists like Frank Kozik, Kinsey and Coop. MOG content can also be easily added to MySpace pages or personal blogs. "Thanks to bleeding-edge technology and ridiculously easy tools, MOG takes the work out of showing the world what you're about musically and connecting you with others with similar musical tastes," said MOG CEO David Hyman.
