Microsoft Developing Xbox-branded Portable Player, Media Retail ServiceAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 11, 2006 - 3:46pm.
Seattle - The Seattle Times reported on Tuesday that Microsoft intends to release a line of Xbox-branded digital media products -- including a media player application and online media retail service -- in addition to a device designed to compete with Apple's iPod. The paper based its report on "research, reporting and information from a source close to the project," which is codenamed "Argo." Microsoft has reportedly committed "hundreds of millions" of dollars to produce and market the device, application and service. Bloomberg News reported last week that Microsoft's Wi-Fi-capable iPod competitor device will ship to retailers in time for the holiday shopping season.
