Report: Blue Laser Market to Generate $28 Billion in Sales in 2010Authored by Mark Hefflinger on July 14, 2006 - 12:16pm.
Santa Clara, Calif. - Devices utilizing new blue laser technology, including HD DVD and Blu-ray DVD players and disc drives, and the PlayStation 3, are expected to generate $28 billion in sales in 2010, according to a report from Santa Clara Consulting Group (SCGG). In particular, the PlayStation 3 is expected to account for more than half of the $2 billion in blue laser-related revenue for 2006. For 2010, the firm projects $4 billion in sales for blue laser DVD players; $3 billion in sales of movies for these players; $4 billion in sales for blue laser PC drives; and sales of $400 million for blank media for these devices. In the games arena, SCGG predicts $6 billion in sales for blue laser-based game consoles in 2010, and $10 billion in sales of games for these consoles. "Currently the market seems to be preoccupied with the format battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD technologies; what is overlooked is the fact that a market is developing and the opportunity is huge," said SCGG managing director David Bunzel.
