“My name is Bond. James Bond”. The James Bond franchise is one of the most recognized and lucrative in movie history. The next chapter will be written this year as the British actor Daniel Craig takes on the role of Bond from Pierce Brosnan in the coming movie “Casino Royale”. Now, is he the second coming of Connery or totally wrong for the part?
The movie “Casino Royale” premieres November 17 this year, but the discussion if Daniel Craig is the right or wrong choice to play the secret agent is already heated on the Internet. On websites such as CraigNotBond.com, the people who think that Craig is wrong for the role argue everything from that he has kissed guys in previous movies to that he has the wrong hair color (see user-contibuted poster below).
Then there are the people who believe that Craig is perfect for the role as James Bond. I am part of this camp. First of all, the Bond-franchise is in bad need of a make-over. Can you remember the last Bond movie? Did not think so. They have become generic. Daniel Craig will surely shake more things up than his Martini. With special effects and visually stunning fighting scenes in movies such as Matrix and the Bourne Identity, the 21st Bond movie have to go a different way to stand out. In “Casino Royale”, based on author Ian Flemings first novel about Bond, we will see how Bond became Bond. It will show him before he got polished and comfortable with his “licence to kill”.
Judging by the buzz online and the box office success of big event movies this summer, no matter what you think of Daniel Craig, it will be one of the big movies of this coming fall.
