Dolby, Germany's Infitec to Develop 3D Digital Cinema SystemAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 31, 2006 - 12:53pm.
San Francisco - Dolby Laboratories, the developer of digital audio and surround-sound technologies, announced on Monday that it has partnered with Germany-based Infitec to develop a new 3D digital cinema delivery system. The 3D technology from Infitec, which was founded as a research project of DamilerChrysler for use in automotive design, will be integrated with Dolby's existing Dolby Digital Cinema system for movie exhibitors. "Recent 3-D digital movie releases have demonstrated true audience demand," said Tim Partridge, a senior vice president at Dolby Laboratories. "Per screen attendances for 3-D digital screens have been more than double those of traditional showings, which is why we believe that combining the 3-D experience with our Dolby Digital Cinema solution is a win-win proposition for exhibitors and moviegoers." Dolby said the 3D digital cinema technology will be available in the spring of 2007.
