New York - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg today declared Aug. 8 "Pokemon Day," as gamers gathered in the city's Bryant Park to compete in the Pokemon Video Game National Championships. Part of the Pokemon Party of the Decade, organized to commemorate Pokemon's 10th anniversary, the game competition will feature a celebrity appearance from pro wrestler Hulk Hogan. Originally introduced in 1996 in Japan as a trading card game, the Pokemon franchise has since accumulated $25 billion in worldwide retail sales, including 26 video game titles that have sold more than 140 million units worldwide.
