CNET News.com: Mobile Virtual Network Operators StrugglingAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 17, 2006 - 12:55pm.
San Francisco - CNET News.com on Thursday reported on mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) like Disney Mobile, Mobile ESPN and Helio, which are struggling to attract subscribers. According to various analysts, Disney Mobile and Mobile ESPN are expected to lose $135 million in 2006, while the two services and Helio are estimated to have less than 10,000 subscribers apiece. "The results, at least initially, even though it's only been six months, were disappointing and we're monitoring this carefully," Disney CEO Robert Iger said recently of Mobile ESPN. Other MVNO's have been relatively more successful. Boost Mobile, which launched in 2002, claimed 250,000 in its first year, while Virgin Mobile, also launched in 2002, signed up 1 million subscribers in its first nine months.
