Judge Blocks Louisiana Video Game LawAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 25, 2006 - 1:17pm.
Baton Rogue, La. - A federal judge has blocked a Louisiana law that would ban the sale of video games to minors if an average person would conclude the games "depict violence in a manner patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community with respect to what is suitable for minors." U.S. District Court Judge James Brady granted the Entertainment Software Association's (ESA) request for a preliminary injunction against implementation of the law, which was signed into law by Gov. Kathleen Blanco in June. Judge Brady said the law is likely to be shown to violate First Amendment free speech protections, as have numerous similar laws enacted in other states. "In the post-Katrina era, voters should be outraged that the legislature and governor wasted their tax dollars on this ill-fated attack on video games," said ESA president Doug Lowenstein.
