Reston, Va. - Sprint Nextel on Tuesday launched the nation's first pay-per-view movie service for mobile phones. The service, called Sprint Movies, currently streams more than 45 full-length movies from Buena Vista VOD, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Movies cost between $3.99 and $5.99 each for unlimited access that varies between 24 hours and a week. The service, which is powered by mSpot and requires a multimedia headset, includes many of the same features of a DVD player, allowing viewers to play, pause and skip forward or backward to different chapters. The launch comes 10 months after Sprint became the first carrier in the U.S. to offer any type of full-length movies on mobile phones, launching a subscription service featuring a selection of movies, TV shows and concerts for $6.95 a month.
