Amazon Unbox LogoSeattle - Amazon.com on Thursday announced the launch of a video download service, Amazon Unbox, which will offer a selection of thousands of TV shows, movies and other video content from more than 30 studio and network partners. The service claims DVD-quality picture for video content that can be purchased on one PC and downloaded to another, and also transferred to Windows Media-compatible portable media players. Unbox uses progressive downloading technology, so most broadband users will be able to begin viewing videos within five minutes of ordering, rather than after the entire file arrives. Initial network content partners for Unbox include CBS, Fox, BBC, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central and MTV, while studio partners include Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros., Lionsgate and MGM. TV shows offered on Unbox, such as "CSI," "24" and "Star Trek," will sell for $1.99 per episode. Movies will sell for between $7.99 and $14.99, and rent for $3.99, with titles available at launch to include "Brokeback Mountain," "V for Vendetta," "Walk the Line," "Chinatown" and "Ben Hur." Amazon is offering a free trial of the Unbox service, in the form of a free TV show download for users. "Now Amazon.com customers can choose to get videos delivered to their doorstep from Amazon's DVD store or choose Amazon Unbox and download DVD-quality picture movies or television shows to their PC," said Bill Carr, Amazon.com's vice president of digital media.
