Microsoft, BBC to Collaborate on Next-Generation Digital Broadcasting
/ September 28, 2006 5:50 pm

London – Microsoft announced on Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the BBC to develop next-generation digital broadcasting technologies. The BBC's digital strategy includes development of its online archive, the creation of "a radically re-invented website in the Web 2.0 world," and research into ways to share its online content in the future. "To ensure that the BBC is able to embrace the creative challenges of the digital future, we need to forge strategic partnerships with technology companies and distributors for the benefit of license payers," said BBC director general Mark Thompson. The agreement does not tie the BBC into purchasing any specific Microsoft hardware, software or services, but the two companies plan to potentially collaborate in areas including search and navigation, distribution, and content enablement. "We are [also] meeting with Real Networks, IBM and Linden (Labs, behind the "Second Life" 3D digital world), and we're also keen to speak to the Apples and Googles of this world," a BBC representative told CNET News.com.
