Buzz Watch: Lonely Planet on PSP

Surfing the blogosphere this morning, I came across the release of Lonely Planet travel guides on Sony Playstation Portable, PSP. This is a great example of innovative new ways of delivering traditional content on new media platforms. This marriage makes a lot of sense, especially since Sony reportedly is pimping up the PSP with GPS hardware and software, due to be released in Japan in December. Which backpacker would not want a sweet PSP along for the ride now?

You can have all your entertainment needs satisfied when killing time on that train in Vietnam, as well while leaving all those heavy travel guides at home while all the time having the confidence of never being lost. This device will make you the envy of all your fellow travellers.

On a personal note, however, I discovered on my trips to Asia and South America that the really hard-core backpackers believe that the Lonely Planet guides are the Anti-Christ. In their eyes, the guide books are making previously undiscovered paradise destinations like Phi-Phi islands in Thailand into tourist traps, directing thousands of pale sweatpants-wearing British blokes there, as well as oportunistic locals that start up Fish and Chips huts and selling bootleg copies of Kenny G on every street corner.

So, on second thought, perhaps you better keep that PSP to yourself. At least if you plan to hang out with some real hard core back-packers.
