WSJ: Cingular to Team With Yahoo, Napster, eMusic on Mobile ServiceAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on November 1, 2006 - 2:34pm.
New York - Mobile network operator Cingular Wireless is set to announce partnerships with Napster, Yahoo, eMusic and XM Satellite Radio that will greatly expand its mobile music service offering, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
The new service would allow over-the-air song downloads to phones, as well as the transfer of existing CD collections in MP3 format to phones over a USB connection. The service will also support Microsoft's WMA format, which is used with both Napster's and Yahoo's subscription services. Citing sources familiar with the matter, The Journal said an announcement could come as early as tomorrow on the collaboration. Rival Sprint said on Wednesday that its own mobile music store has sold 8 million downloads in its first year.
