New York - Robert Redford's Sundance Institute announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with the mobile industry's GSM Association, which represents 700 operators worldwide, to commission the creation of short films for distribution on cell phones.

The Sundance Film Festival: Global Short Film Project has asked six independent filmmakers to create five short films exclusively for mobile distribution. All of the selected filmmakers --Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris; Justin Lin; Maria Maggenti; Cory McAbee; and Jody Hill -- have all had films screen at the Sundance Festival.

"Cell phones are fast becoming the 'fourth screen' medium, after television, cinema and computers," said Sundance Institute president and founder Robert Redford. "We feel this experiment embodies fully, our quarter-century dedication to exploring new platforms to support wider distribution of independent voices in filmmaking."

The short films created for the project will premiere on the opening day of the 3GSM World Congress next February in Barcelona, and will later be made available for broader distribution through mobile carriers following the event.
