"World of Warcraft" Subs Hit 7.5 Million; Expansion Due Jan. 16

Irvine, Calif. - Continuing the meteoric rise of its massively multiplayer online game, Blizzard Entertainment announced on Thursday that "World of Warcraft" now claims 7.5 million players worldwide.

The Vivendi-owned game publisher plans to release a major expansion to the game, "World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade," on Jan. 16 in North America and Europe, and soon after in Korea, Australia, Singapore and other territories.

The $39 expansion pack will include features such as two new playable races, new talents and abilities for all character classes, new magical weapons and armor, and many enhancements to player-vs.-player action. The original "World of Warcraft" game now sells for $19.99; players also pay a $15 per month subscription fee for online access to the game.
