Lycos Cinema Enables Real-Time Chat While Watching MoviesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on November 13, 2006 - 3:26pm.
Waltham, Mass. - Web portal Lycos on Monday announced the launch of a movie streaming service that lets users chat online in real-time while they watch the video. Lycos Cinema will allow users to create their own password-protected Screening Rooms, and chat live with other viewers in the room.
At launch, Lycos Cinema will offer films including "The Champagne Club," "Ants" and "Night of the Living Dead," with more titles to be added in coming weeks. All films will be streamed using Microsoft's delivery and digital rights management technologies. "User-generated content is very popular but it's also very difficult to monetize because advertisers are not necessarily willing to put advertising dollars against content they cannot control" said Lycos COO Brian Kalinowski. "Our focus continues to remain on high-quality, natural form licensed video content, and you will see continuous top-tier film and TV content announcements coming from Lycos in the coming weeks."
