Sunnyvale, Calif. - Answering rival Google's new venture into newspaper advertising, Yahoo said on Monday that it has partnered with more than 150 daily papers to deliver search, graphical and classified advertising to consumers in local communities.

The project, initially focusing on recruitment advertising from Yahoo's HotJobs business, will provide search, content and other local features on the newspapers' websites. Consortium members -- representing newspaper in 38 states -- include Belo Corp., Cox Newspapers, Hearst Newspapers, Journal Register Company, Lee Enterprises, MediaNews Group The E.W. Scripps Company. Both the San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News will be part of the project.

"We believe the local segment is largely untapped and provides significant opportunities to expand audience engagement and subsequently grow local advertising," said Terry Semel, the chairman and CEO of Yahoo.

Google announced earlier this month that it will let clients bid on print ads in more then 50 daily newspapers as part of a three-month pilot program.
