Report: Asia Pacific Mobile Game Revenues to Hit $4.4 Billion in 2010Authored by Mark Hefflinger on November 21, 2006 - 2:05pm.
Scottsdale, Ariz. - Revenues from mobile phone games in the Asia Pacific region reached $1.56 billion in 2005 and are predicted to grow to $4.4 billion in 2010, according to a report from market research firm In-Stat. Japan and South Korea were responsible for about half of the 2005 total, but future growth drivers will be the burgeoning mobile markets of China and India.
However, the report found that more than half of 2G and 3G subscribers in Asia Pacific said they were unlikely to play mobile games within the next six months. "While there is great growth potential with expected increases in mobile subscribers and gaming-capable handsets, current problems are proving difficult to surmount," said In-Stat analyst Bryan Wang. "In-Stat's user survey reflects low penetration of mobile games among Asia/Pacific mobile phone users. Fragmentation of the mobile gaming industry, revenue sharing issues, poor user experiences, competition from dedicated portable gaming devices, and game piracy are all issues needing to be addressed."
