Bentonville, Ark. - Retail giant Wal-Mart on Tuesday announced the beta launch of a new movie download service that offers consumers the option to add a video download with the purchase of a movie on DVD.

Consumers buying "Superman Returns" on DVD at a Wal-Mart store will be given three download options: $1.97 for portable devices; $2.97 for PC/laptop; or $3.97 for both portable players and PC/laptops.

The DVD will include a promotional code to enter on the company's website, at which time consumers must create an account and install the Wal-Mart Video Download Manager, and then may begin watching the movie as it downloads.

Portable players supported include Microsoft's Zune and other Windows-based devices, but not Apple's video iPod. Wal-Mart said it also plans to launch a service that will sell downloads of both movies and TV shows, but did not provide additional details.
