Dulles, Va. - The European Commission has approved Telecom Italia's $856 million acquisition of AOL Germany from parent Time Warner, the Associated Press reported.

Upon completion of the deal, which was first announced in September, Telecom Italia will become the second largest broadband Internet provider in Germany, with more than 3.2 million subscribers. As of June, AOL Germany had 1.1 million broadband and 1.3 million dial-up subscribers.

The sale continues AOL's shift from an Internet access provider to a provider of advertising-supported content.
