Sunnyvale, Calif. - Chipmakers Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia announced this week that they have received subpoenas from the U.S. Department of Justice, which is investigating potential antitrust violations related to graphics processors and cards.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD entered the market for graphics chips when it acquired ATI Technologies last month for $5.4 billion. AMD said the DOJ has not made any specific allegations against AMD or ATI, and intends to cooperate with the investigation. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Nvidia also said no specific allegations were made, and that it will cooperate with the DOJ. A spokeswoman for the Justice Department confirmed for Reuters on Friday that it is investigating "the possibility of anticompetitive practices involving the graphics processing units and cards industry."
