MySpace to Block Registered Sex OffendersAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on December 5, 2006 - 2:40pm.
Los Angeles - News Corp.'s MySpace online social network announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Sentinel Tech Holding Corp., a provider of online identity and background verification services, to block convicted sex offenders from accessing MySpace.
Under the agreement, Sentinel will build the first national, real-time, searchable sex offender database to contain detailed background information on the 550,000 registered sex offenders in the U.S., culled from various federal and state law enforcement agencies. Using the database, MySpace will be able to search for and delete any profiles created by registered sex offenders. "We are committed to keeping sex offenders off MySpace,” said MySpace chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam. MySpace has also asked Congress to introduce legislation that would require convicted sex offenders to register all of their e-mail addresses in a national database.
