Fox to Develop Multiplayer Game Based on "Firefly"

Burbank, Calif. - Multiverse Network announced on Friday that it has optioned the rights from 20th Century Fox to develop a massively multiplayer online game based on the Fox sci-fi TV series "Firefly," which was created by Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel").

The show developed a following after its premiere on Fox in 2002, but was cancelled before its first season's conclusion. The show went on to see strong sales when it was released on DVD, prompting a film based on the series from Universal Pictures, called "Serenity."

"We see virtual worlds as an extraordinarily promising new entertainment medium," said Adam Kline, vice president of new media enterprises at 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising Division.

"This is a great opportunity for 20th Century Fox and for the fans of Firefly because Multiverse will deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans." The "Firefly" multiplayer game is expected to launch on The Multiverse Network in 2008.
