Patent Suit Filed Against Panasonic, Samsung and Nokia Over Bluetooth TechnologyAuthored by Ned Sherman on January 3, 2007 - 12:21pm.
Seattle - Washington Research Foundation (WRF), which assists Washington state universities with commercializing technology, has filed a patent suit alleging that Matsushita's Panasonic division, Samsung and Nokia, are infringing on four patents sold under the "Bluetooth" name. The suit, which was filed on December 21, 2006 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, requests that the court issue an order barring the sale of products that use the patented technology. The suit also seeks monetary damages to be determined by a jury. The "Bluetooth" technology at issue is used in billions of devices, including wireless headsets. According to WSF, the patents trace back to research conducted by a University of Washington student in the early 1990s. The defendants in the case have yet to respond to the allegations.
